Canada letters to the editor Actions speak louder than words: municipal review of daycare sends unwanted message to families After reading the article "Talks of possibly withdrawing Huron East from the day-care busi- ness" in last week's paper, I am concerned that the council is only looking at a very narrow definition of value when assess- ing the services that are being offered. I know that when you are in a meeting surrounded by facts and figures it can be very hard to see the real impact of decisions on your community members or to understand how great of a value one service may have to your citizens. As a parent of a young family in this municipality, please allow me to share some per- spective with you. There are a number of respectable and suc- cessful daycares both in this municipality and in this county. However, the Vanastra Early Childhood Centre (formerly Tuckersmith Day Nursery) is unique in the way that they deliver their services. My son has attended at the Vanastra Early Childhood Centre for over a year. Within the first few months, I gained a newfound understanding of the business of childcare. This Childhood Centre is not simply a place where I leave my child every day so that I can attend work. In reality, the Childhood Centre is in the busi- ness of peace of mind - for par- ents so that they can go to work every day knowing that their child is receiving the care they deserve. In some cases, parents are fortunate to find a place where they rest assured that their child is receiving the same level of care that they would at home. Personally, I have been fortunate enough to hear my child call the staff at the day- care "Mom" which provides a level of comfort and assurance knowing that my child feels just as supported and nurtured - physically, emotionally and educationally at day-care as he does at home with his family. I am very blessed to have a child- care provider that my child not St. Nick's Christmas Shopping Day Dear Editor: On Saturday, December 5 from 9 am -noon St. Thomas' Anglican Church in Seaforth will once again be alive with the sound of happy and excited children! St. Nick's Christmas Shopping Day for Children invites all kids ages 3-13 to shop for their family members by giv- ing a monetary donation at the door. Children, in turn, are assisted by our helpful elves to choose and wrap up to 6 gifts each from our great selection of donated items, while their par- ents wait, enjoying refreshments and checking out the silent auc- tion table. Now in our 10th year we rely on our generous com- munity - merchants, church congregations and individuals - to make this event an over- whelming success! Small gift items or monetary tax- receipta- ble donations are graciously welcomed and can be dropped off at the church's John Street entrance, on Friday November 27 from 10 am -1 pm. Our Gift Assembly Day will be held Sat- urday, November 28 from 10 am to 2 pm. We invite participa- tion from interested members of the community including Stu- dents who are earning commu- nity volunteer hours. Please call 519-522-1435 for more info or a Remembrance Day thanks from the Legion To the Editor: I wish to thank the citizens of the Municipality of Huron East for making Seaforth Legion's Branch 156 Remembrance Day service an outstanding success. I wish to acknowledge Seaforth Public School, St. James Catholic Repairs finished Recently, much needed brick -work restoration/repairs was finished at the Van Egmond House -Museum. The School and the Brussels Cadets for their participation in the fes- tivities. I would like to thank Liz Cardno for her tireless efforts in the set up and food preparation for the day. I would like to thank Piper Shane Ward from the Clin- ton Pipe Band for his leadership Board of Directors of the Van Egmond foundation would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our thanks and only looks forward to going to but also is in no rush to leave at the end of the day. There is no greater feeling for a parent to head off to work knowing that their child is not missing out because you needed to go to work today. I live on a very quiet back- street without a sidewallc, with the lowest priority of snow removal and I am unable to walk anywhere once the tem- peratures start to plummet. It is not clear as a young family in Huron East, how the municipal- ity is spending our tax dollars to benefit the family. Because of this review, our family has started wondering if Huron East is the right place for a young family. I understand the concerns that the Municipal Council faces with decreasing transfer pay- ments and the question of increasing taxes or cutting ser- vices to balance the budget. Instead of looking at the cost of the day-care as a deficit on the list of items needed. Through the generosity of supporters and shoppers, since we began in 2006 over $15,000 has been returned to the local communi- ties of Seaforth, Clinton and Mitchell, for programs benefit- ing kids, such as free skating, Rural Response for Healthy Chil- dren, Huron County Booster Club, Lion's Club, Christmas food hampers, Women's Shelter, non-profit daycare centres, sum- mer camps, music programs, Library programs, Huron Hos- pice Rainbows, Seaforth Opti- mists Childhood Cancer, and others. Thank you to all the 'St. Nick's Elves' in our and generous donation back to the Branch and to all the Legion volunteers who helped me during Remembrance activities. Nov 11 is only one day that we remember our veterans. However, it is paramount that we do not forget what generations appreciation to the Huron Heritage Fund. Their contribu- tion of a grant went a long way in helping us to complete this bottom line, please look at it as an investment in growing a vibrant community that achieves a balance with people of all ages. The success of the day-care only hinges on the Municipal Council's ability to develop an attraction plan for young families to fill every avail- able space and grow the day- care even more! I respectfully request that council seriously consider the message that "parting ways with the daycare business" sends to young families - both those in the municipality and to those that are looking to relocate here. I have heard numerous council- lors ponder at the conundrum of how to attract young families and engage the younger citizens in this society. If this is sincerely something that this municipal- ity is trying to achieve then I strongly urge you to continue your valued support of the Vanastra Early Childhood Centre. — Heather McClinchey neighbourhood for faithfully sharing their time, talent and treasure to support children. We also appreciate the excellent press coverage and photos of these events through the years provided by the Seaforth Exposi- tor. With your ongoing support, St. Nick's Christmas Shopping Day will continue to provide a fun shopping day for children, a memorable Christmas morning for families and far reaching benefits for our community!
