This year marks the fifth year of an annual assess- ment to measure the degree of the student's achievements. "Our goal as a school board is to think about the perspective of parents and what they want from our school," Explained Vince ea orthhuronex 1 osrtor.co MacDonald, the director of education at the Huron - Perth Catholic District School during a phone conversation with the Expositor. "They want transpar- ency, public confidence and a report on how well the students are doing at school." This thorough evalua- tion of the students who studied at the academic level showed them scoring 85 per cent, which is the provincial standard and what MacDonald regards as a "steady ray of pro- gress." As for the pupils who studied at the applied level, they maintained the average grades for the province- 54 per cent. The percentages are refer- enced from when the stu- dents were first tested in Grade 6. At the academic level 61 per cent who were not successful in Grade 6 achieved success in their freshman year of high school. "It important to cele- brate those children that are rising to standard," MacDonald said. The percentage of the remaining four years for both levels are as followed: •Academic 2014-85 per cent, 2013- 88 per cent, 2012-84 per cent and 2011-90 per cent •Applied 2014-47 per cent, 2013- 51 per cent, 2012-62 per cent and 2011-43 per cent Despite the fact there is a significant percentage difference between /A:111%.11611 Well, Well, Well.. "Many of the students who work at the applied level in mathematics are identified as students with learning disabilities and those present unique challenges," he said. "Many of those students have had a lot of experience with failure and they become disen- gaged, that's a challenge we're always working towards."
