Cenotaph crosses being replaced by man that $t. Anne's updates
has worked for different armies across the world

A Vanastra man who has trained
in air force joint -ventures with the
U.S. government is revamping a
piece of Huron East's history.
At the intersection of Victoria
Street and Gouinlock Street in Sea -
forth, a large cement shrine known
as the cenotaph stands. Surrounding
the monument are old white crosses
in commemoration of the lost sol-
diers of war. As time has progressed,
the wooden crosses have rotted and
are in dire need of replacement. The
Royal Canadian Legion is aware of
the state the pieces of heritage are in,
so they decided to contact the per-
son they consider to be most suitable
for the task.
"My wife mentioned it to him,
and he said we would love to do it.
He talked to his employees and
they said we'll donate our time,"
said Pat DeJong president of the
Royal Canadian Legion.
The long-time legion member
also mentioned this renovation
would be pro bono and the man
responsible for the generous con-
tribution is the owner at Composite
Creations Andy Phillips from
Vanastra.
"It's one of those things that we
understand across Canada, the
ability of the Legions have dimin-
ished. The funding is just not there
anymore, they are facing chal-
lenges just like any other organiza-
tion;' Phillips said. "But this partic-
ular organization, the Legion, I
think it was just due diligence:'
Phillips, 45, is an experienced
craftsman. The entrepreneur spe-
cializes in the manufacturing of
canoes that are shipped all across
Canada and parts of the U.S. In
addition to the Composite Creation
business, he's also managed to
dabble in several other employed
contracts from countries through-
out the world. A few years prior,
Phillips taught the Royal Nether-
lands Air Force how to make
repairs to surface and structural
damage, mainly focusing on heli-
copters, cargo jets and fighter jets.
One of his greatest accomplish-
ments was operating shoulder to
shoulder with the U.S. government
in a cooperative project educating
the Saudi Arabian Marines how to
maintain custom-built hovercrafts
I'm 45 years old now and
they'll likely outlive me,"
— said Phillips on the phone
from his shop in Vanastra.
that were built by the U.S. Marines.
Both international endeavors con-
centrated in the training of working
with carbon, fiberglass and Kevlar.
To maintain the longevity of the
crosses at the cenotaph, Philips will
be using similar elements. Instead
of using wood for the whole base,
there will be carbon on the backs, a
technique that Phillips is assured
will outlast the previous assemblies
for a longer period of time.
"I'm 45 years old now and they'll
likely outlive me," said Phillips on
the phone from his shop in
Vanastra.
Since Remembrance Day is just
around the corner, the skilled
tradesman said he's hoping the
finished artifacts will be replaced
and be ready for viewing by this
Tuesday or Wednesday.

The Royal Canadian Legion in
Seaforth reached out to Andy Phillips
pertaining to the construction of the
crosses at the cenotaph. He gladly
took on the project for free.
