FIFA comes to St.
Columban
Representatives from the upcoming
FIFA Women's World Cup, slated to
be held this June and July in cities
across Canada, visited St. Columban
last week to promote the event.
Base ticket prices for the soccer
competition start as low as $20.15,
with games to be held in Edmonton,
Vancouver, Winnipeg, Moncton,
Montreal and Ottawa.
(Pictured) Khanh Be, community
outreach coordinator for the
Women's World Cup, and Josie
Pingitore, ticketing and hospitality
manager for the event, are joined
by St. Columban Soccer Association
volunteers Jason Dietz and Linda
Feeney, as well as players Hilary
and Courtney Feeney.
As well, registration for the
upcoming soccer season is still
ongoing. According to the St.
Columban Soccer Association, 135
players eight years old or younger
have since registered for the
season so far, while 176 players
aged nine or older have registered.
Huron and Perth health units to discuss potential merger

The idea of merging the
health units of Perth and
Huron counties is back on
the table.
A group of representatives
from boards and senior staff
from each health unit is
being created to begin the
discussions.
"We are coming in with a
blank slate," said Tyler
Hessel, mayor of Bluewater
and the chair of Huron
County's board of health,
explaining the idea of a
merger has been discussed
in the past but the two
sides could never "find a
mutual ground."
A possible merger was first
raised in the Revitalizing
Ontario's Public Health
Capacity report in 2005.
"Services are becoming
more difficult to provide.
We are looking at how we
can provide the same level
of service - if not better,"
Hessel said.
According to a media
release, while financial
implications will be con-
sidered, the initial discus-
sions will focus on whether
there is a shared vision
between the two health
units that could be
strengthened by an amal-
gamation, and if a merger
would improve the service
to communities.
Hessel said both counties
have areas of specific exper-
tise that could help each
other.
"Perth has an alliance
with the University of
Waterloo which could help
us, and with Lake Huron,
Huron County is more spe-
cialized in water testing,"
Hessel said.
According to Hessel, the
two health units are already
successfully partnering
together on a number of
initiatives.
The Ministry of Health
and Long -Term Care has
expressed interest in
reviewing public health
organizations in Ontario,
so Hessel said it is better
for them to organically
examine an amalgamation
than have the provincial
government make the
decision for them.
Public health unit are
funded in partnership by the
province and lower -tier
municipalities.
"It's about a 70/30 split
with the province being the
majority funder. Funding is
a historical model and if
they (the Ministry) are

discussions are in the "very
early stages" and they are
not looking to change the
level of services provided in
either county.
He believes that partner-
ships between lower -tier
municipalities will be
become even more preva-
lent going forward.

the way of the future is work-
ing with our neighbours,"

Hessel said.
He said it doesn't always
make sense in duplicating
services and working
together leads to better deci-
sions for all those involved.
"Sometimes the only ones
who look at borders are the
politicians," Hessel said.
