Local ringette team has busy weekend Michele Hodgen Special to the Expositor The Exeter/Seaforth U19A provincial ringette team played lots of ringette this past weekend and are now Team Ontario. The locals had to fight from behind to win 4-2 over Mississauga for the pro- vincial championship title. The Championship game started as a high paced end- to-end battle with both teams testing the defence and goaltenders. Exeter/Seaforth U19A fell behind with 5:32 remain- ing in the first, but at 1:46 Amanda Verbeke found Lindsay Govers for the equalizer. The locals stayed on the attack and Emily Neu - brand got one over the Mis- sissauga goalie's pad when Verbeke and Hailey Wietersen passed the ring for the go ahead marker at the end of the first half. Mississauga got the equal- izer at 10:04 and kept on pressing. Local goaltender Krys- tin Krainz was stellar throughout the game stopping 30 shots. Amy Alcock put the team ahead on a great corner shot that came from Amanda Hodgert for the power play go ahead goal at 6:42. Avery Wedow led a nice pass to Verbeke again on a power play to get a little bit of security with 2:59 remaining in the game. Exeter/Seaforth held Mis- sissauga off and finished the game 4-2 and claimed the Ontario U19A Provincial Ringette Championship. The locals finished the round robin play in first place with 12 points and a 6-0-0 record this earned them a bye to the Sunday final against the winner of the 2nd vs 3rd game. In round robin play, the scores were 7-2 over Lon- don, 3-2 over Elora -Fer- gus, 3-1 over West Ottawa, 3-2 over Chatham, 2-0 over Timmins, and 3-1 over Mississauga. The team is now Team Ontario and will represent Ontario at the Eastern Cana- dian Ringette Championship in Moncton, New Brunswick April 16-19. They have 4 weeks to fun- draise to help with the unex- pected cost of the trip.
