St. Columban product takes
home OFSAA hockey gold

For Mel Nolan, success on the
ice comes from strong chemistry
off it.
The St. Columban native
attributes the dominant play of
late by the St. Michael High
School girls hockey squad, of
which she is a member, to the
strong sense of camaraderie
among teammates.
Nolan, a Grade 11 student
at the Stratford school, says
the sense of friendship
among players made their
drive to a gold medal at the
Ontario Federation of School
Athletic Associations
(OFSAA) tournament in
Kenora earlier this month all
the more special.
"The entire experience was
amazing. I was so happy to be
able to share this opportunity
with some of my closest friends,"
she told the Expositor. "I think
that's why we did so well - we
were like a family off the ice and
that transferred to our play on
the ice."
St. Michael represented west-
ern Ontario at the annual high
school hockey tournament, held
from March 8 to 13.
The team from Stratford
swept through the competi-
tion at the event, scoring 39
times and only conceding
one goal.
Nolan represented a major
offensive threat throughout the
competition, racking up four
goals and 10 assists.
In the final, St. Michael
blew past the Fort Frances
Muskies 5 - 1, capping off a
determined drive to the
championship partly moti-
vated by a defeat in last year's
title game.
"We had the skill and the
drive to win this year, after
losing in the gold medal game
last year," Nolan said. "I felt

like we had a
team this year."
On top of her high school
squad, Nolan also plays for
the Saugeen-Maitland
very strong
Lightning Midget AA girls
hockey team.
Stratford is slated to host the
OFSAA girls hockey tournament
in 2016.
