Breath of Spring returns for 2015
Celebrating "Ten
Bloomin' Years", the Sea -

The Lung Association are
once again presenting their

"Bakers Have the Best
Buns." And as we look
ahead to updating our
spring wardrobes, we'll
learn "Things Your Momma
Never Told You About
Fashion" from Marita's
Fashion Boutique. Londes-

Why I am going to "Rock Your Socks"
Naomi Pless
Special to the Expositor
March 21 marked "Rock
Your Socks" day, a world-
wide Down Syndrome
awareness event. At Sea -
forth Co-operative Chil-
dren's Centre, our staff
and children participate
in this day. We all wear
our craziest socks, ones
that are bright and
bold, don't match, are
very colourful, fun and
unique. We gather in a
circle and talk about our
socks and how different
they are...and then we gig-
gle. We giggle because it's
fun and when you have
that child -like innocence,
you don't always notice
people's socks. You don't
always look at the differ-
ences in the friends
around you, or if you do
notice, you don't care. It
doesn't matter because we
are all a little different.
We are going to "Rock
Your Socks" again this

year in support of our
good friend and co-
worker, Ryan Jewitt. Ryan
has Down Syndrome. He
has taught the children
and our staff members
some important lessons
about life, and how to be a
stellar employee. Here are
my top three...
1. Be happy. Ryan comes
to work and leaves work
with a smile. He is friendly
to everyone and always
seems to be in a good
mood. He always has a
story to share with an
accompanying giggle that
is highly contagious. He
always brightens my day.
2. Sing, dance, and cele-
brate life. Don't take life
too seriously. Life is good.
As Ryan works away dili-
gently in the kitchen at
our child care centre, he
sings along to the country
music station on a little
clock radio. He sings out
loud, and he doesn't care
who hears him. Down in
my office, I can hear him
singing every word to a
Garth Brooks song and it
makes me smile. I want to
sing along as well.
I have seen him dance, and
the same applies. He
dances to the best of his
ability and I acknowledge
him as somewhat of a
celebrity as he stars in the
"Almost Famous Players"
show each year. He has fun
when he dances and thor-
oughly enjoys the music
and lives in the moment.
Every chance he gets, Ryan
is celebrating life. He tells
me great stories of where
he has been or who is hav-
ing a birthday, or the next
trip he is planning. Ryan
lives and Ryan lives well.
3. Be yourself. Just be
yourself. We were all
born with different traits
that make up who we are.
At the child care centre,
we value acceptance,
belonging, and inclusion.
I teach my own children to
see the good in others. I
have had a serious discus-
sion with my ten year old
about the "R" word when
she first heard it. She now
understands why that
word can be very hurtful
and she made a presenta-
tion for her fellow class
mates. (Proud Mom
moment) Children (my
own included) genuinely
like Ryan because he is
kind, he is friendly and he
makes us laugh. That is
just who he is. Who
wouldn't want to be his
friend?
So this year, and for
many years to come, we
hope you will join us in
"Rock Your Socks" aware-
ness day. We will cele-
brate our uniqueness and
recognize one of our good
friends, Ryan, for all that
he teaches us. Be happy.
Sing, dance and celebrate
life. Be yourself.
