Huron Expositor, 2015-03-18, Page 3Seaforth student wins $36,000 scholarship to Queen's Joe Fonseca is one of only 40 incoming students to win a coveted $36,000 entrance scholarship at Queen's University Marco Vigliott Huron Expositor Joe Fonseca has secured himself a place among elite company at Queen's Univer- sity prior to even registering for his first course at the prestigious school. The St. Anne's Secondary School senior is one of roughly 40 students in the university's incoming class of 2015-2016 to be awarded a Chancellor's Scholarship, which grants a recipient $36,000 over the course of their four-year undergradu- ate program. "It's pretty gratifying," Fon- seca told the Expositor in an interview on March 11. "It just meant that the last four years and all I've done - all the extra curriculars I've been involved with and hard work I've put in (my) aca- demics - paid off." Fonseca, who will be stud- ying neuroscience at the Kingston, Ont. school, was told about his lucrative win in January following a lengthy application process that required applicants to pen Neuroscience is the kind of the last frontier of science; it's the last given mystery in science — Joe Fonseca several essays and be nomi- nated by their high school. The essays for the scholar- ship focused on the ethos behind the prize, namely excellence in academics, creativity and leadership. Applicants were also required to attract the sup- port of several referees to endorse their bid. To snag the coveted schol- arship, Fonseca had to beat out about 5,000 other appli- cants among the 20,000 stu- dents set to start their stud- ies at Queen's this fall. He also boasts an exten- sive record of involvement in extracurricular activities at St. Anne's, where he sits as Prime Minister of the school's student cabinet and a leading member of the Social Justice Club, in addi- tion to several other posts. Fonseca said he is already eyeing a future career in medicine, either in neuropharmaceuticals or in the closely related psychiatry field. "Neuroscience is the kind of the last frontier of science; it's the last given mystery in science," he said of his passion for the field, which studies the human nervous system. While some students may have seen the scholarship win as an opportunity to rest on their laurels for the remainder of the year, Fon- seca is already turning his focus to gaining fast-track admission to medical school ATTENTION ADVERTISERS! As part of the mail pack- age announcing he had been awarded the scholarship, Fonseca also received an application to the first in Canada program, which allows a small number of students to directly gain entrance to medical school after only two years in an undergraduate program. While he declares that his chances of winning accept- ance are slim, it'd be tough to bet against this budding, young local talent.
