(Pictured) A logo used by the Avon Maitland School Board. To school boards, Fraser rankings don't paint the whole picture Dave Flaherty Huron Expositor Goderich Public School (GPS) was the highest amongst local schools in the annual ranking of provincial elementary schools by the Fraser Institute. Overall, GPS was ranked 445th out of the 3,037 schools, both public and pri- vate, that were ranked. The rankings are based on nine academic indicators from the results of Grade 3 and Grade 6 reading, writing and math tests administered by the province's Equality Quality and Accountability (EQAO) during the 2013-14 school year. GPS finished with an over- all rating of 7.7, down slightly from the past two years, but a massive improvement over the 2011 rating of 4.5. Clinton Public School ranked 1,628th and Seaforth Public School at 1,894th. Brookside Public School in Lucknow ranked 2,134th, Brucefield's Huron Cen- tennial Public School ranked 1,549th. St. Joseph Catholic in Clin- ton ranked 1,894th, St. James Catholic in Seaforth 2134th and St. Marys in Goderich at 2561st. Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) manager of communications Steve Howe told QMI Agency that while they don't totally dismiss the rankings, they have issues with them. "There is a problem with the Fraser rankings," Howe said. "Because of the meth- odology they use they are taking information from a half day and ranking schools from 1 to 3,037:' Howe further explained that there are many variables that can happen on EQAO testing day. "One bad day can impact the entire school," he said. The true assessment of students, and in turn entire schools, should be their final evaluations at the end of the year, Howe said. He said while it is encour- aging for schools to be ranked high, the rankings don't hold "that much weight:' Howe also noted that it could be very demoralizing for a school to achieve low rankings. seaforthhuronexp ositor.com
