The Central Huron Sec-
ondary School boys curling
team has successfully
repeated as Gore Provincial
champions, reclaiming the
title in dramatic fashion at
this year's edition of the
tournament hosted in
Woodstock last month.
The team, coached by
Todd Doig, rallied from a five -
point deficit after the second
end to narrowly best a high
school squad from Gana-
noque in the final on Feb. 14.
"They got off to a bit of a
bad start (in the final). Our
skip missed his last shot in
the first end and his last shot
in the second end and we
were down 5-0 after two,"
Doig said in an interview
with the Expositor. "But, they
managed to come back and
win it in an extra end:'
The victory marks the sec-
ond consecutive year the
team from the Clinton -based
school has taken the trophy
and grants the talented
squad an opportunity to
potentially repeat as provin-
cial champions at the

Athletic Associations
(OFSAA) tournament later
this year.
The CHSS squad, however,
will have to win another
tournament to gain admis-
sion to the OFSAA competi-
tion, which they won in
2014.
Doig credits his resource-
ful and experienced team for
never giving up at the Gore
tournament despite falling
behind early in the final.
"When I went out for the
fourth end break, (the play-
ers) were down a bit - they
were still down by three (at
the time)," he said. "I just
told them to keep plugging
away and that they were
doing very well and be proud
of themselves no matter
what happens:'
"They kept plugging away
and never gave up," he
added.
The student -players put "a
lot of pressure" on them-
selves to repeat as champi-
ons at the Gore tournament
and win a chance to play
again at OFSAA, Doig said,
adding that claiming title a
second time around is "actu-
ally harder" than winning it
the first time.

in similar situations, he
noted, also helped the play-
ers calmly recover from
going down early. In addi-
tion to last year's triumphs,
the CHSS team also partici-
pates in the Ontario Junior
Curling Tour.
"Their confidence is very
high," Doig said. "But win-
ning it a second time is a dif-
ferent sort of pressure -
when you're the defending
champions, everyone is out
to beat you."
