Sexy laundry too hot to handle

The critically acclaimed
Canadian comedy by Van-
couver's Michele Riml has
been widely produced
across North America, and
has been translated into
several languages with pro-
ductions in Poland, Ger-
many, Iceland, and
Mexico.
After 25 years of marriage,
time, kids, stress - and grav-
ity - have all taken their toll
on Alice and Henry's rela-
tionship. Their marriage is
not only on the rocks, it's
almost hung out to dry.
Eager to stoke the embers
of a marriage that flamed out
years ago, Alice books a
high-end romantic getaway
at a luxurious hotel armed
with a copy of Sex for Dum-
mies and a bag full of leather
and lace. However, Henry
feels the weekend away is
too extravagant and is con-
stantly preoccupied with the
exorbitant price of optional
extras in the hotel room.
While contained in their
cramped quarters, free from
the distractions of everyday
life, Alice and Henry inevita-
bly discover a lot about each
other - and what they really
want for the future.
"This humorous portrayal
of marriage rings true for
couples at all stages of life,"
says Alex Mustakas, Artistic
Director of Drayton Enter-
tainment. "Sexy Laundry is
exceedingly funny but it's
also insightful, poignant and
full of heart."
Director J. Sean Elliott has
an undeniable knack for
comedy fostering impecca-
ble delivery and rhythmic
pacing from his dynamic
duo. He guides the talented
twosome through the fast -
paced witty dialogue, ensur-
ing that every hilarious quip
and touching moment is just
right. The result is a produc-
tion that gleams with
humour and insight.
Sexy Laundry is packed
with all the wit and whimsy
that is expected of a typical
romantic comedy, but also
has underlying layers of ten-
sion, desire, and compassion
that promise to immediately
connect with audiences.
Sheldon Davis gives an
outstanding portrayal of the
reluctant and unromantic
husband, Henry. Davis cap-
tures the typical guy past his
prime, devoted to his pas-
sions in life that may not
necessarily include his mar-
riage. Davis has proven time
and again that he's terrifi-
cally funny and charming, all
while being a bit of a grump.
Audiences may remember
him from previous Huron
Country Playhouse produc-
tions including Weekend
Comedy, The Last Resort,
and The Foursome.
Veteran actress Gabrielle
Jones shines as the devoted
wife, Alice - a woman pas-
sionate about putting the
spice back in her marriage
no matter how embarrass-
ing. Jones does an excellent
job of conveying the desper-
ation behind Alice's ultima-
tum. This is serious busi-
ness for her - she's
determined jumpstart their
love life or call it quits.
Jones has an impressive
resume which includes sev-
eral seasons with the Strat-
ford and Shaw Festivals, as
well as national tours of
Mamma Mia! and Les
Miserables.
The onstage chemistry
between Davis and Jones is
effortless. The duo is so
convincing as a married
couple that one would
think they have actually
been together for 25 years.
Davis and Jones carry both
the comedic and more seri-
ous sections with remarka-
ble realism as they alter-
nate between petty
squabbles and fizzled
romantic gestures.
