Offer French immersion in Huron County: Huron East council Marco Vigliotti Huron Expositor Municipal officials are calling for French immer- sion classes to be offered to students residing in Huron County, with supporters say- ing the language regime will open doors for local young people. Huron East council unanimously passed a motion at its June 2 meet- ing encouraging the Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) to con- sider bringing immersion services and classes to the county. The motion was brought forward by Coun. Kevin Wilbee, who said in a subsequent statement that there is a "general consensus in the commu- nity that French immer- sion should be available to residents." "Being able to speak both official languages opens up opportunities for young people and our youth should be afforded that competitive advantage," he said. Currently French immer- sion services are available only in AMDSB locations in Stratford, such as Anne Hathaway Public School, Bedford Public School and Stratford Central. According to Wilbee, only students on existing bus routes serving Stratford schools are eligible for French immersion. The motion will be for- warded to all lower -tier municipalities in Huron County for endorsement and support.
