Huron East to submit grant application for Brussels arena

Huron East is turning to a new
federal infrastructure grant pro-
gram in hopes of securing fund-
ing for a proposed $1.56 million
expansion to the Brussels Mor-
ris Grey (BMG) Community
Centre.
The municipality's council
voted Tuesday to submit an appli-
cation seeking $600,000 - or 38
per cent of the project's estimated
total cost - to the recently
announced Canada 150 Commu-
nity Infrastructure Program,
though stopped short of guaran-
teeing funding for the project
even if it does manage to win fed-
eral dollars.
"The only thing were asking for
approval (of)...is to go ahead and
file the grant application - we are
not authorizing the
money," Bernie MacLellan, Mayor
of Huron East, said at the June 2
meeting.
The mayor successfully moti-
vated his counterparts on coun-
cil to move quickly on submit-
ting an application to the grant
program, warning that any
delays might cause the munici-
pality to miss the June 9 submis-
sion deadline.
The grant scheme, which ear-
marks $44.4 million for projects
in southern Ontario over the next
two years, will fund anywhere
between 33 to 50 per cent of a
successful applicant project's
costs.

administrative officer, has said that
the committee managing the Brus-
sels arena is eyeing an L-shaped
addition to the east and south sides
of the facility that would push the
dressing rooms behind the
benches and expand the congested
main lobby area.
The committee, he explained,
has allocated funding in their
past two budgets to develop line
drawings and prepare project
estimates as part of its plans for
renovations to address what it
views as the "limited number and
undersized dressing rooms in the
facility.”
In talks with Brussels commu-
nity groups about a possible
application, the municipality sug-
gested it could offer up to
$320,000 to the expansion plan
after the neighbouring munici-
pality of Morris-Turnberry sig-
nalled it could allocate $80,000 to
the BMG Community Centre,
Knight said.

The remainder, he added,
would then be made up from fun-
draising and a roughly $125,000
contribution from the local Opti-
mist club.
The awarding of any funds for
the project by the municipality,
however, will still have to be
approved during next year's
budget process, allowing coun-
cil the opportunity to later
decide against contributing
even if the application proves
successful.
"Council will have the opportu-
nity to turn it down next year dur-
ing the budget process if it in fact
we feel it isn't justified at the
point or we don't want to carry on
with it," Mayor MacLellan
explained to his fellow elected
members.
The comments came after con-
cerns were raised by Coun. Bob
Fisher about the proposed expan-
sion, which is anticipated to add
another six locker rooms to the
facility.
Fisher voiced doubts about the
need for additional locker rooms,
saying he was told that there were
only 25 hours of hockey played at
the Brussels arena on an average
week.
"I can't see where you need six
dressing rooms and a bigger this
and a bigger that," he said at the
meeting.
MacLellan, though, warned
against arguing about the design of
the proposed renovation, saying
the immediate focus was on sub-
mitting the application, with the
finer details to be determined at a
later time.
"If we do get the grant we could
certainly iron out the details at that
point about whether we need
six change rooms, four change
rooms or whatever," he said, noting
that the price of the project "could
change a little."
If the application is not success-
ful, then the municipality will most
likely not provide any money for
the prospective expansion,
MacLellan added.
