University students tour Seaforth
26 first-year medical students from the Schulich Medical School at the University of
Western Ontario visited the four hospitals of the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance last
week. They came from as far away as Vancouver and Philadelphia and only one student
was from a farm (a hobby and vineyard in Prince Edward County). There were four students
in Seaforth and they spent three days at the medical clinic, in ER and on the inpatient unit
learning about small town medicine.
Wednesday afternoon was spent introducing the entire group to a working dairy farm. The
plan behind this is to give them an appreciation of the equipment used and the injuries that
can occur on a farm -and to get a chance for a photo op in a farm tractor!
This also hopefully gives them a better understanding of the complexity and science that is
behind today's modern farm- and it never hurts to learn there are other groups that work as
hard or harder than most physicians!
The farm tour was done at the farm of Krista and Evan Eckert and Evan was gracious
enough to be our tour guide.
