The Seaforth Community
Hospital has added a crucial
new piece of "lifesaving"
equipment thanks to a
robust grant from the hospi-
tal's foundation.
Roughly $89,000 was
given to the hospital to pur-
chase a defibrillator, as well
as to move forward with
digital retrofits to its X-ray
machine.
Hospital staff introduced
the sleek, compact defibril-
lator, which uses electrical
pulses or shocks to help con-
trol irregular heartbeats,
including in heart attack
instances, during a brief
cheque presentation event
on May 28.
"The defibrillator is impor-
tant as lifesaving equipment
in our emergency depart-
ment," Anne Campbell, site
administrator for the Sea -
forth hospital, said in an
interview. "The foundation
purchased that to enable us
to have the most current
equipment available to defi-
brillate patients."
The new defibrillator is
one of two now available for
use at the hospital.
Dr. Andrzej Kluz, who
works at the Seaforth site
and would most likely be
using the defibrillator, called
the device a "crucial part" of
the hospital's equipment.
"We have to be able moni-
tor our patient's closely, so
we do need that equipment,"
he explained.
Meanwhile, the X-ray
upgrade will bolster the
quality and production
speed of the digital images
produced by the machine,
staff said.
The Konica -Minolta digi-
tal radiography retrofit to the
hospital's existing mobile
X-ray unit provides a "higher
quality X-ray image at the
bedside in a matter of sec-
onds, as opposed to the
more dated imaging,"
explained Graeme Johnston,
director of diagnostic ser-
vices for the Huron Perth
Healthcare Alliance.
"Mobile imaging in the
hospital is especially impor-
tant for patients in trauma
and critical conditions when
imaging travels to the
patient's bedside," he said in
an email message
"It allows us...to have the
most appropriate software to
improve our images," added
Campbell, the hospital
administrator.
Ron Lavoie, chair of the
Seaforth Hospital Founda-
tion, praised the generosity
of the community for raising
the funds to purchase the
defibrillator and bankroll
the X-ray retrofit, noting
that the entirety of the
donation was generated
over the past year.
The fundraising efforts
include the foundation's
summer and winter cam-
paigns, as well as the radio
telethon, he said.
