A Spain teen confused when he first arrived to Seaforth Shaun Gregory Huron Expositor Nikolas Zubirrate, 17, from Spain stands at the farm in Seaforth. He travelled to Canada to enhance his English. Before Nikolas arrived in Can- ada, he pictured a nation filled with landscapes and was staggered at the differences in culture. Nikolas Zubirrate, 17, from Vito- ria, Spain, jumped off a plane and touched down on Canadian soil thinking Ontario and all the other provinces were like British Columbia. "I thought Canada would have a lot of mountains, wild life and (sev- eral different) kinds of creatures," said Zubirrate. " This place is flat" Where Zubirrate lives, he said there are several dense populated mountains that surround the area. Vitoria is the capital of Basque Country, which Zubirrate said has mountains 2000 meters high. He said the standard tourist assumes Spain is a place with no rocky ter- rain, "most think all we have is beaches" That is not the case declared the teenage Spaniard, "I have been hik- ing mountains since I was born:' The confusions most portray of Spain are comparable to what Zubirrate said he envisioned Can- ada as. Furthermore he said chuck- ling that the relationships between friends are what baffled him the most. "When we say hello in Spain we kiss each other, with two kisses," said Zubirrate. He stated that this is more com- mon among men and women, not men to men. "Here in Canada, you only give the hand shake, that was very surprising, but very easy to understand:' Zubirrate arrived in Seaforth three weeks ago through a course pro- vided by his high school. The plan of this visit is to interact with people to improve his English. He is stationed on a farm where he has been work- ing with animals and the public. "I want to be a lawyer not a farmer, but this is awesome because I can be with animals and experience new things," said Zubirrate. Zubirrate indicated he will be departing back to Spain on July 25 and that his stay was "pleasant in Seaforth."
