A new piece of traffic
scanning device is helping to
boost police efficiency on
the roads and has led offic-
ers to several successful
arrests.
The Automated Licence
Plate Recognition (ALPR)
project originally started in
Ontario in 2014 with four
police cruisers. Now there
are approximately 31 cruis-
ers that are being used
through out the province
and Huron County is cur-
rently sharing one of those
vehicles with Perth County
and Bruce County.
POLICE BRIEFS
Police have new
info on hit and
run death
(HURON COUNTY, ON) -On
Sunday July 26 it will be six
years since the death of Jason
Pearson. He was 31 -years -
old when he was struck
and killed in South Huron.
At approximately 5:00 a.m. on
Sunday, July 26, 2009. Pearson,
was hit by a vehicle just north
of the Grand Bend Motorplex on
Grand Bend Line (County Road #
81). The driver that struck Pear-
son failed to remain at the scene
of the collision. Moments later a
motorist came upon the collision
and called for assistance. Pearson
was transported to hospital where
he died as a result of the inju-
ries he sustained in the collision.
Over the course of the investiga-
tion, the Huron County OPP Crime
Unit has issued new information
regarding a vehicle of interest. The
vehicle is believed to have passed
the scene of the driver and pos-
sibly the passengers may have
Last week the sophisti-
cated scanning tool led
Huron police to lay numer-
ous charges. The ALPR put
the brakes on a suspended
driver July 18 when officers
patrolling in Dashwood
scanned a Ford Ranger and a
"hit" was indentified.
The special machine scans
and compares plates against
the Ontario Ministry of
Transportation database,
verifying whether the auto-
mobile has stolen plates,
expired validation stickers,
or belongs to people who
have outstanding arrest war-
rants or other serious
charges against them.
After stopping the vehicle the
driver was then placed under
arrest for occupying a vehicle
while having a suspended driv-
er's licence. A search warrant
followed and the police found
marijuana, a switchblade knife
and stolen licence plates.
"Three quarters of
information regarding this colli-
sion. Police would like to speak
with the occupants of that vehicle.
The vehicle of interest is
described as a dark col-
oured, extended cab pickup
truck. The truck was pull-
ing a large, enclosed trailer
with dual wheels. The vehi-
cle was last seen travelling
northbound on Grand Bend
Line toward Grand Bend.

Stolen Vehicle

(GODERICH, ON) —Last week Huron
County OPP received notification
that a Chevrolet Silverado pickup
truck that was stolen from McGee
Automotive Supply in Goderich
this week had been recovered.

stolen truck was found parked
on a New Hamburg street by
Waterloo Regional Police officers.
The police said the inves-
tigation is on going.
suspended drivers continue
to drive while under suspen-
sion," said Huron County
OPP media relations officer,
Jamie Stanley.
"With this equipment and
technology, it's indicating
yes this is a suspended
driver, this is an expired vali-
dation sticker," said Stanley.
"These officers driving the
(cars with ALPR installed) are
identifying a whole set of other
offences, which is fantastic:'
Stanley said this is saving
the OPP time and energy
and he believes this could
not be possible with stand-
ard highway patrolling.
"Officers stop an X
amount of cars during the
day, but we're certainly not
stopping 2000-3000 an hour,"
said Stanley.
Stanley stated that the
Huron OPP detachment
"would certainly love to have
a vehicle here full-time,
when officers operate that

on a very regular basis.
In the last week the Huron
county OPP have laid more
than ten charges from using the
advanced computer aided
technology. In a press release
given out by the OPP on July 20,
they said that the ALPR is a use-
ful asset for the police force and
is currently in high demand.
"The ALPR equipped
cruiser is a great tool for our
frontline officers. The system
is very user-friendly and the
results have been more than
expected," said Huron
County OPP Staff Sergeant,
Shawn Johnson.
"This system allows our
officers to detect those sus-
pended drivers and other
drivers that try to circumvent
the law. Ensuring Huron
County roadways remain as
safe as possible is a top pri-
ority for our detachment
members and this tool is cer-
tainly helping us."
ing and locked the speed of the
Mazda at 134 km/h in a posted
