Tell that to the 40 local res- idents who arrived at 8 a.m. to learn how to CrossFit outside. The brisk morning at Egmondville Park featured lessons from Level 1 CrossFit trainer Kaleda Connell, where she invited everybody July 11 for a free training ses- sion. The event included fit- ness education involving burpees, lunges and squats, which Connell combined into a partnered workout. Males and females from the ages of 20-65 years old made an appearance to study what Connell calls a "functional movement performed at high intensity." "We borrow movements from gymnastics, weightlift- ing, track and field and we mix them up and make a work out from it," said Connell. Connell, 26, who moved to Seaforth from Palmerston last year, said this outdoor event was meant to bring the neighborhood together. "We actually create a stronger community with these kinds of group -style workouts," said Connell. Chartrand said Connell customizes people's pro- grams based on their age and abilities. Given that he and Connell are neighbours, he said this is something he could see himself maybe try- ing out in the future. "I see the crew showing up (at her house) at 5:30 a.m. every morning, then there is another crew that shows up at six at night," said Chartrand. Connell runs her own per- sonal gym from out her garage in Seaforth. Surrounded by riding lawn mowers, couches and tools, this place of fitness is not a typical gym that most people are accustomed to. Most gyms are packed with mirrors, weights and machines, but not this gym. "We don't use machines, that's like saying swear words when you say machines," said Connell.
