Seaforth resident searching for indentity of four nurses
Shaun Gregory
Huron Expositor
An old photo depicting
long velvet drapes and old-
fashioned nurse caps worn
by four women has a Sea -
forth resident wondering
whom they could be.
During a home clean up of
deceased Melinda Beuer-
man, who died last January,
the 9x8 picture was found in
the basement. Scripted in
capital letter across the
bottom "SEAFORTH
MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
GRADUATING CLASS," with
the year side -ways
"1925"next to it.
Not knowing what to
exactly do with the dusty
artifact, it was passed over to
retired Seaforth nurse,
Dianne Wood.
"That's why when they
were cleaning (out the
house)because I'm a nurse
they thought that maybe I
would like to have it," said
Wood.
"I would like to know
who's in it, a picture is not
much without some names
under it:'
Wood said the graduating
class must have been in their
20s. She added that if one of
them were alive today, they
would have to be almost
120 -years -old.
At the moment the Sea -
forth Manor Retirement Liv-
ing and Long Term Care is
the building that stands
where Seaforth Memorial
Hospital once was. Accord-
ing to the book "The Story of
Seaforth" by Isabelle Camp-
bell, the need for local doc-
tors was the reason for the
Hospital to open its doors in
1921, after Alex A. McLen-
nan sold the Commercial
Hotel. The hospital provided
health care to Seaforth and
the district for years.
Wood has since gone to
the retirement home and
asked around, by chance if
any person knows anything
concerning these mysterious
nurses, but the search was
cold.
"I don't know if anybody
would know any informa-
tion, I think it was just a
treasure they found," said
Wood.
Wood explained how she
is stumped to why Beuer-
man came in possession of
the almost century -old
photo. She said the departed
woman worked at the
Stewart Brothers store,
which was a dress shop that
closed several years back.
Cathy Stewart, General
Manager for Seaforth Manor,
said the organization does
have photos from the 1970s,
but none dating back as
early as the one obtained by
Wood.
If somebody recognizes
these four women or has any
information please call the
Seaforth Huron Expositor at
