Area teen calls torch run "amazing" Sarah Murray part of Pan Am Games build up in London Andy Bader Mitchell Advocate Never expecting she'd be chosen as one of the 3,000 torchbearers for the upcom- ing Pan Am Games, Sarah Murray wrote a paragraph to the organizers along time ago. "I thought, 'there's no way I'll get this' but I did it anyway - it was for kicks and giggles," she said. Her older brother Robert had sent her a link to a web- site about the criteria needed to be chosen to run with the torch, and she noted in her submission how inspired she was by Robert's previous vol- unteering at the Para Pan Am Games. In March, she found out she had been chosen as one of the torchbearers after all. She ran during the London leg of the relay, held last Thursday, June 18, and it was even better than she expected. "It was over before you knew it," she said last week, noting the 200 -metre length. "But it went really, really well. It was more than I expected it was amazing, actually. "It happened so fast but it was incredible when you sat back and realized that I was a part of it." Murray, 15, a Grade 10 stu- dent at St. Michael Catholic Secondary School in Stratford, lives just northwest of Dublin. She said all torchbearers received t -shirts, shorts and socks with the Pan Am colours and logo. The daughter of Al and Mary -Lou Murray, her parents and an aunt were pre- sent during the run. The aluminum torch itself is a "unique symbol of power- ful energy'; the official web- site declares, and is 65 -centi- metres long and weighs 1.2 kg, and "unites" the 41 Pan - Am nations. Later that same day, 19 torchbearers carried the flame through Stratford on Day 19 as the torch makes its way towards the Games' opening ceremony in Toronto on July 10.
