The clacking of sticks and
swishing of rocks nosily
reverberates around the
cozy confides of the Sea -
forth Curling Rink, as play-
ers from a visiting London-
based team hit the ice for a
day of lighthearted
matches.
Unable to secure time at
a rink closer to home, the
team had jumped at the
opportunity to make the
roughly hourlong drive to
play in Seaforth.
Preparing for the first hurl,
the visiting Londoners
employ a peculiar forma-
tion, with one of the team's
players darting out before
the skip and loudly tapping
his stick to indicate where
the rock should be directed
towards.
It's a unique but neces-
sary setup as the members
of this curling team face
varying degrees of visual
impairment. Although it
may seem challenging, the
pre -hurl formation appears
to be one of the few ways
the unknowing observer
would sense any difference.
That, and of course the
team's name, which is
emblazoned on the back of
its members' matching
black jackets.

"(The big challenge) is we
can't see the other end. So,
we have to put the broom
in different places and
other times you have to go
by sound or look for bodies
moving to gauge items,"
Tim Prohaszka, one of the
team's players, said of how
him and his teammates
manage to continue partic-
ipating in the sport with
limited vision. "For the
totally blind, it's totally dif-
ferent. We bang a broom on
the ice so they have a noise
to throw towards."
The team, now in its third
year, has about 10 players,
he said, with recruits mostly
hearing about the team
through word of mouth.
Despite its name, the
Vision Impaired Curlers
boast players from across
the region, including two
players who are based out
of Seaforth, Prohaszka said.
That connection to the
community, he noted, led
to the invitation to take
over the Seaforth Curling
Rink on Feb. 13.
As a result of its diverse
talent pool, the Vision
Impaired Curlers often ven-
ture out on the road to play,
especially when being una-
ble to secure ice time closer
to London, Prohaszka said.
In terms of the quality of
play, it seems similar to the
many other teams that have
taken the ice in Seaforth.
The tosses mostly hit
their intended targets,

while the sweeping is just
as furious.
And in-between hurls,
teammates mill around,
chatting and laughing -
surely like every other curl-
ing team that has graced
the ice surface.
According to Prohaszka,
the players really soak up
the opportunity to continue
hitting the curling rink even
while facing vision
limitations.
Recruiting, however,
remains a major challenge,
he said, adding that he
hopes increased public
attention and media expo-
sure will attract more play-
ers to the Vision Impaired
Curlers' ranks.
