Melody Hodgson
elected as Seaforth
BIA chairwoman
Broker assumes
role from

Seaforth's Business Improve-
ment Area has a new chairwoman.
Melody Hodgson was selected
to succeed retiring chair Car-
olanne Doig at the BIA's annual
general meeting on Feb. 11.
Hodgson, a broker with the
Huron Perth Mortgage Group,
expressed excitement about
assuming the position from Doig,
who she said did a "tremendous
job" in her three-year term as chair.
A new BIA board featuring a
full slate of nine members was
also installed at the meeting,
though one appointee has yet to
be confirmed, as they were
absent from the proceedings.
The board boasts an "exciting"
mix of older stalwarts and "new
blood," Hodgson said, referenc-
ing the addition of several new
members.
"We hope to mix it up and
have some new ideas," she said in
an interview. "We got some ideas
for what to do this next year and
we'll see if they come together"
Hodgson said the new board
will look to build on a "very suc-
cessful year" that saw significant
strides made on the development
of the group's strategic plan.
Also at the meeting, members
approved the BIA's budget for
2015, including allocating funds
to alter the appearance of the
light posts in Seaforth.
Hodgson said the move was
prompted by a provincial gov-
ernment mandate to switch to
LED exterior lighting that pressed
the Municipality of Huron East to
begin working towards changing
its streetlights.
The BIA then seized this oppor-
tunity to rethink the design of Sea-
forth's exterior lighting, she said.
"It doesn't seem like a big deal
- who notices them - but if we
have to change them anywhere
why not improve how they
look?" Hodgson said.
The BIA, she said, received
funding from the Seaforth Com-
munity Trust to offset the costs of
the design change, which should
be completed by July 1st to coin -
Gide with the community's Can-
ada Day celebrations.
TD Bank Canada also awarded
funding to the BIA, chipping in
$2,500 for this year's edition of
SummerFest, to be held on July 17.
Organized by TD, SummerFest
aims to generate increased interest
in downtown businesses by hosting
an array of family -friendly activities
and attractions in a blocked -off sec-
tion of Seaforth's Main Street.
According to Hodgson, TD is
aiming to grow the event this
year by looking to add a bumper
boat activity to the festivities.
Last year's SummerFest
included a inflatable climbing
wall and bouncy castle.
