Students learn about snowshoeing; spring water safety

It's winter so you might
as well enjoy the snow.
That's exactly what stu-
dents in Grades 1 and 2 at
St. Patrick's School in Dub-
lin did last Friday, Feb. 6
thanks to a visit from the
Ausable Bayfield Conser-
vation Authority (ABCA).
Denise Iszczuk, a conser-
vation educator with ABCA,
was at the school to teach
students about a unique
but enjoyable means of
walking in winter.
"I'm teaching them how
to snowshoe and playing
some fun games and activ-
ities while on snowshoes,"
she said.
For many students, it
was their very first experi-
ence with snowshoes.
"They were able to go
further out on the school
property and we were able
to explore their school
yard with the expansive
snow that they have and
some new trees that were
planted there by the stu-
dents not too long ago."
Students played relay
and tag type games while
wearing the snowshoes,
and learned a little bit
about some of the common
wildlife seen in winter.
"I brought in some pelts
with me too for them to see
and feel," she added.
"They were having fun
and I was having fun out
there with them as well."
The ABCA was able to
provide free snowshoe
rental for students at the
school thanks to the ABCA
foundation that paid for the
rental fees, noted Iszczuk.
After a morning of snow -
shoeing, the entire school
learned about spring water
safety, through the spring
water awareness program
(SWAP).
"It is about making good
and safe decisions around
water," she said.
"I know we don't have a
lot of open water right
now, but the conditions of
the ice and conditions of
the rivers and streams
around us can change
quickly."
The SWAP is part of the
ABCA regular educational
programs offered at area
schools, within the author-
ity's watershed region.
"We're just here to offer
them some advice to stay
away from the water and to
have an adult with them at
all times," said Iszczuk.
"We can have high water
and dangerous conditions
at any time of year."
