CHIP is an organization that strives for the preven- tion of injury through edu- cation and programming It has representation from the Huron County Health Unit, Huron County OPP, the Ministry of Trans- portation, Wingham Police Service and the municipali- ties of Ashfield-Colborne- Wawanosh, North Huron, South Huron, Bluewater, Morris-Turnberry and the Town of Goderich. Three -hundred fifty-four, or 32 per cent, of those col- lisions involved deer, Stan- ley said. CHIP made significant strides in warning against the dangers of distracted driving this past year. CHIP's "Leave the Phone Alone" website allows Huron County residents to make a "pledge" to refrain from using their phones while driving. The organization has cre- ated a "place mat" -type poster that includes tips on how to avoid being distracted by phones while driving. Stanley said they had a booth at the Huron County Job Fair in Wingham last year and he felt they made quite an impressive on a number of young people. In other news, CHIP has purchased an electronic speed meter sign that is available for use to all municipalities that may be concerned about speeding in certain locations. "It's very useful data for the OPP," Stanley said. Other successful pro- grams have been safe driv- ing sessions for seniors, Halloween safety visits to local schools, an ATV safety campaign and education on the dangers of driving while under the influence of recreational drugs. Stanley said they plan on continuing all these pro- grams in 2015 and have requested a $5,000 grant from the county. The requested grant would cover $2,000 for materials and supplies for a child pedestrian safety pro- gram, $450 for hall rentals for events, $1,550 for adver- tising and $1,000 for the insurance and liability for the electronic speed sign.
