Going outside required some serious protection, like the type exhibited by this crew working away on Main Street North on Feb. 10. A big thanks to all who helped in the Doug Perkes memorial hockey tournament, on Feb 6, 7, 8. Thanks to all our sponsors... Heather Percival County urges students to get up-to-date on immunizations Marco Vigliotti Huron Expositor Huron County's public health unit has begun send- ing letters to area students whose vaccinations aren't up to date as part of its annual review of immuniza- tion records. The county health depart- ment is advising families who have received a letter to ensure their child's vaccina- tions are current, which is required for all students attending schools in Ontario. Under the province's Immunization of School Pupils Act, students must be vaccinated against sev- eral infectious diseases, including diphtheria, teta- nus, polio, measles, mumps and rubella. Vaccines for meningitis and pertussis (whooping cough) were added to the list last year, as well as the varicella (chickenpox) vaccine for students born in 2010 or later. Families who have received a letter should complete the remainder of the notice and send it to the county health unit by email, fax or phone. Officials note that stu- dents who have already received their immuniza- tions may still receive a let- ter, as that information is not automatically shared with county health authorities. "Students may have received these vaccines but the Health Unit may not have the records," Shirley Chalm- ers, a public health nurse with the county, said in a pre- pared statement, adding that vaccinations received at the doctor's office "do not auto- matically get shared with the Health Unit:' A second notice will be distributed if one fails to respond to the first letter, the county health unit said.
