The hometown Stars put forward a dominating per- formance, going undefeated in their run to the title and racking up a huge 7-3 win over the Ilderton Jets in the final at the Seaforth Arena on Feb. 8. The three-day competi- tion also proved to be a suc- cessful fundraiser, generat- ing an estimated $2,500 to $3,500 - prior to expenses being deducted - for a fund also named after Perkes that provides financial assistance for underprivileged children to register in organized sports, tournament organ- izer Heather Percival said. Perkes, Percival's late hus- band, was known for his active involvement in minor hockey in Seaforth. The charity has already paid for 39 hockey registra- tions, as well as several for ringette and broomball, since its incorporation six years prior, according to Per- cival, who noted that all pro- ceeds from entry fees, spon- sorships and other fundraising activities held during the tournament directly benefit the Perkes fund. "The biggest plus of the tournament was how much fun all the kids had," she told the Expositor. "Everyone seemed to be enjoying the hockey, the ministicks and gaming systems in the hall." This year's event marked several notable additions, including an appearance by Ontario Minor Hockey Asso- ciation mascot Chuck the Puck and a hockey shoot-out game named after NHL star Matt Duchene with minis - ticks and nets. Meanwhile, the Knights of Columbus provided break- fast and lunch each day the tournament ran, which allowed families to stay at the arena in between games, Percival said. The competition also fea- tured appearances by two local products who have reached the upper echelons of professional hockey. Retired NHL player Boyd Devereaux and NHL ref- eree Scott Driscoll were on hand for ceremonial puck drops at the start of the tour- nament, with both sticking around afterwards to sign autographs for the young players. Driscoll also brought along NHL whistles for the referees officiating at the tournament. Percival said her favourite part as an organizer is hand- ing out the awards to the game's three stars, which are given to the the hardest working players as opposed to the most skilled. The tournament, she noted, emphasizes the importance of the journey- men on each team, who are always "trying hard but never getting the accolades." As part of that commit- ment to awarding hard work, organizers also give one child per team a full-sized composite hockey stick. The recipient is usually "someone who is either just starting out with hockey, or has never been able to afford a composite stick or just needs a boost," according to Percival. "It is really nice to see the ear splitting grins when these kids are recognized," she added. "The look on each of the recipients faces is what keeps me doing this from year to year."
