building up ahead of steam
Special to Postmedia
In two years' time, abrand
new, bustling community
will have sprung up on the
Ryan and Ringgenberg
Farms near Walton in Huron
East The popular Interna-
tional Plowing Match &
Rural Expo (IPM) will be in
full swing. This historic event
will mark its 100th anniver-
sary and the Canadian Ses-
quicentennial with a cele-
bration of our country's rural
mots and down-to-earth life-
style. With one of its goals
being to connect and involve
communities and citizens
within Huron County, three
traditional IPM projects have
been launched that are sure
to tweak the interest and
imagination of local
residents.
Sponsored by the Huron
Produce Division of Suntas-
tic Hothouse Inc., the IPM
2017 Cookbook is a com-
prehensive collection of
hundreds of the favourite
recipes of local cooks and
also includes beautiful pho-
tographs of Huron scenes
captured by Bonnie Sitter
and Telfer Wegg. "Take a
Tour through Huron County
Kitchens" is full of treats for
the taste buds and is avisual
buffet as well. At just $15,
the very special 370 -page
cuisine compendium is a
great buy. And who
wouldn't be pleased to find
this 12 -chapter addition to
their kitchen under the
Christmas tree? To place
your order now, contact
Allan Carter at 519.522.0399.
However, the IPM 2017
cookbookwill eventually be
available as well through
local retailers during
2016-17.
Another significant com-
ponent of all International
Plowing Matches is the
Beautification Contest.
With a recent $25,000 dona-
tion from Trillium Mutual
Insurance Company of Lis-
towel, this project got an
excellent kick-start to put-
ting Huron's best foot for-
ward for the 80,000 visitors
expected to arrive in the
county. Prizes will be
awarded for the Most

agri-business, rural home,
urban home, and seasonal
cottage, as well as for the
Most Improved farmstead.
In addition, groups or
organizations can compete
for an award for the best
planting or landscape pro-
ject completed on public
lands. The entry fee of $25
payable upon registration
includes two tickets to the
IPM Awards Banquet.
Competitors registered
before January 1, 2017, will
be entered into a draw for a
$100 gift certificate from a
local garden centre. Addi-
tional information is availa-
ble from Deb Falconer at
519.233.5393.
The third time-honoured
undertaking of IPMs is their
popular Quilt Project. Tal-
ented quilters purchase a
quilt block of materials for
$12 and create an original
design that is ultimately
incorporated into charming
and unique quilts. Just 200
blocks will be sold and will
soon be available at quilt
shops in Wingham, Ethel,
Exeter and Seaforth, with
prizes to be awarded for
individual quilt blocks prior
to the eventual quilt mak-
ing. The resultant warm
and cozy bed coverings are
raffled off before and during
the IPM. Further details can
be obtained via email to
2017quiltcommittee@
gmail.com.
So beyond plowing the
land, there are wonderful
opportunities for cooks, gar-
deners and quilters to be
part of the huge party
planned for 2017 in Huron
County. The International
Plowing Match & Rural
Expo will definitely crank
your tractor.
