The tour started at 10 a.m. at the West Perth municipal build- ing, where interim clerk Susan Duke gave Rose (a farmer from Logan ward in his regular life), a behind the scenes look at what municipal staff do on a daily basis. Rose also got the chance to chat with treasurer Karen McLagan about how the munic- ipality secures funding for its various projects, before moving onto the West Perth Fire Station to chat with station chief Jim Tubb. "Then we went over to talk to Rick Vivian over at the arena to check out the compressor for the ice and check out the ice - making machine," Rose recounted. "I've never seen one of those compressors before, and I've been there, sort of off and on for years. Some of these places, you know they're there, but you're never in there." After having lunch with McKenzie, the mayors then headed over to the West Perth Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment, where Rose had the chance to check out a brand new police cruiser and watch a demonstration of how police deploy spike strips when an officer is in pursuit of a suspect. The West Perth Library was next on the tour schedule, where Rose was introduced to the ben- efits of having a library card. "You can take out some fairly new DVDs to watch - it's nicer to do it on a Friday because you have an extra day - and there's magazines you can take out - which I thought was good, I don't always get the chance to read the ones I do subscribe to - of course you can use the com- puters there if you want," Rose continued. "I always enjoy reading the township history books, but you can't get hold of the one from Hibbert (ward) anymore, so you can go and look it up there." Near the end of his tour, Oper- ations Manager Mike Kraemer gave Rose, a former contract snow -clearer for the Township of Logan, a tour of the public works shop while answering all of his questions about the machines and equipment contained within. Afterward, McKenzie took Rose to the Mitchell wastewater treatment plant. "There's a lot of behind the scenes stuff that you may not necessarily think of - you may have an idea of what goes on. The odd time I'll go to a council meeting - but I go to square dancing in the winter and that's on Monday nights (during council meetings) - but some- times in the spring and summer I'll go to meetings, but that doesn't give you the full picture," Rose said. As part of his prize, Rose will also be presiding over the Jan. 11, 2016 council meeting with McKenzie. "In 2009, our Conservative Govern- ment introduced the TFSA as an effec- tive way to save money - tax free," said Lobb. "Research shows that almost half of TFSA maximizers are seniors, so why is the Liberal Government so eager to decrease the contribution limit?" On Monday, Federal Finance Minis- ter Bill Morneau confirmed that the contribution limit on the TFSA will drop back to $5,500 from $10,000 effec- tive January 1, 2016. MP Ben Lobb is sponsoring a peti- tion both online and in his constitu- ency offices in an effort to stop the change in contribution limit. The Department of Finance's research shows that people of all ages and income levels max out their TFSA contribution limits - in fact the vast majority are low to middle income earners, with a large proportion being seniors. Currently, 71 per cent of TFSA maximizers are over the age of 55 and 59.4 per cent of max contributors make less than $60,000. Support for the TFSA is consistent across age groups, income levels and regions of Canada. The TFSA program was introduced in 2009 by the Conservative Government. It is a way for individuals who are 18 and older with a valid social insurance number to set money aside tax-free throughout their lifetime. TFSAs are an excellent retirement savings tool for seniors who can no longer take advantage of Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs), and also for young Canadians who need a tax -effective means of saving for their future.
