This time mom and dad get gifts from Santa
Shaun Gregory
Huron Expositor
Christmas is a time when
family gather bearing gifts, typi-
cally the wrapped handouts
emanate from mom and dad's
9-5 income, not today as it was
the parent's turn.
It was 20 days before one of
the most celebrated holidays in
North America, but by all the
families equipped with pre-
sents at the St. Thomas Angli-
can Church in Seaforth, you
would think it was December
25. The community came
together for the 10th annual St.
Nick's Christmas Shopping Day
for the Children. At the door,
tickets with numbers were
handed out, when the specific
numbers were called out, elves
directed the children to "Santa's
workshop:'
"Everything is wrapped and
tagged. The parents are not
allowed to come in, so there's
lots of surprises on Christmas
morning," stated one of the
event's organizers, Helen
Southgate -Oldfield, from
Seaforth.
The church was packed
with youngsters watching Dr.
Seuss' How the Grinch Stole
Christmas film on a TV in the
corner with numerous differ-
ent kinds of cookies and juice
available for everybody.
Southgate -Oldfield said the
event usually sees roughly 125
kids from the age of three to
13 -years -old. All the money
collected from the jamboree,
or what she refers to as a
"completely orientated com-
munity spirit project," is then
contributed to future chil-
dren's programs. The St.
Nick's Christmas Shopping
Day for the Children is a day
that kids can take ownership
for their gifts said
Southgate -Oldfield.
Anything that involves chil-
dren is the most important
thing certainly as an organizer's
standpoint. I just love doing this
for the kids and families, the
neat part about this is that it's
open to everyone, she said.
"It doesn't matter how
much you have, if you can put
a little bit in or if you can put a
lot in the jar, it's great."
