That was the story at Seaforth's Foodland as the organiza- tion kept a "surprise" hush- hush from one of the employees. In the upstairs office of Foodland a small group remained inconspicuous like spies staking out a sub- ject. With a view of the entrance, the group waited for a specific person described as a taller man with a red hat to walk in. "He was kind of getting annoyed because we were pushing him, saying we have to go, he's like what's the rush, we're just going Shaun Gregory Huron Expositor Matthew Southgate, 18, is one of 38 people in Canada to win a $1500 scholarship. A few months ago South - gate's son Matthew applied for a $1500 scholarship offered by Sobeys. Food - land which is a sister com- pany of Sobeys is involved in the scholarship compe- tition, where more than 119 applicants from Can- ada sent in a cover letter and a resume to be judged by the head office. This year was a lower turnout than previous years apply- ing for the scholarship. In 2014, approximately 144 employees submitted an application and in 2013 there were 203. When Southgate found out that her son won, the organization told her to try and keep the news "confi- dential." After being informed what day she should bring Matthew to Foodland, Southgate said she had to come up with a legitimate reason to get him there. She told him, "since you're off to university, let's go buy all your snacks for the first part of your school year:' The plan was in motion, Matthew fell for the bait of junk food. Southgate headed to Foodland where the sur- prise awaited for the grocery clerk. "Our stores are in small communities, we wanted to make sure Matthew didn't find out ahead of time, said Andrea Holowaty, human resources manager for the Central West District Foodland. "We like to surprise candi- dates, it's something we really like to do." Matthew Southgate, 18, mentioned that he had no clue what was going on when he arrived at his place of employment. He thought he was stocking up on snacks for September. He said he began to be suspi- cious when everyone started to crowd around him. "Once they started describing the recipient more, I'm like huh, he sounds familiar," Matthew said. With the Seaforth Food - land being purchased nine weeks ago, this event is "icing on the cake" explained owner of the Foodland in Seaforth, Kevin Baer. This is a familiar celebra- tion for Baer, he and his wife MJ owned a Foodland in Lucan last year and an employee there also won the award. This award comes at a per- fect time for Matthew said Southgate. "It's great Sobeys is offer- ing this opportunity for young people because uni- versity is very expensive, every little bit helps, not that this is little, but every amount helps." Matthew said he is appre- ciative of this scholarship and will "spend it wisely" as he starts his first of four years at the University of Waterloo studying global business and digital arts.
