Thrift shop handed an eviction notice

A notice of eviction may
possibly put a successful
second-hand shop in Sea -
forth out of commission.
Bonnie's Restore and
Dairy Bar located on Main
St. opened to the public July
2014. Since then the store
said they have tripled their
sales, last month the thrift
shop sold more than $3900
worth of product.
"A business that just opens
usually fails, but ours grew
and grew," said owner of
Bonnie's Restore and Dairy
Bar, Wayne Boyle.
The store specializes in
frozen sweets, used cloth-
ing, electronics and a long
list of other products and
items. As the business
developed so did their
relationship with the com-
munity. Currently Boyle
mentioned with some of
the revenue made from the
business, he is donating to
the Seaforth Food Bank,
the hospital and the
Canadian Mental Health
Association.
"If somebody comes here
and doesn't have any money
for clothes or anything we'll
donate whatever they need,"
Boyle said.
His common-law part-
ner Barbara Isaac said
they both saw the need for
a second-hand store in a
small town like Seaforth.
Isaac also known as "Bon-
nie" is familiar with the
used item industry. She
worked with the commu-
nity living and volun-
teered at multiple second
hand clothing stores off
and on for approximately
20 years.
This has all been a dream
that's turned into nightmare
said the couple. After
numerous disagreements
between the two and the
landlord, they were pre-
sented with a notice of evic-
tion, which states they must
have everything in the store
removed by August 31.
Peter Klaver, owner, who
rents to the couple said,
"he's had enough" and he
just wants to put this behind
him.
"It's business that isn't
working out and I have my

reasons for wanting them
gone," Klaver said.
"They can jump up
and down and scream
all they want, but the bottom
line is, at the end of the
month the locks are getting
changed and that's it."
Klaver stated that he does
not have any other issues
with current tenants who he
rents to, who also have store-
fronts on Main St. This is a
simple business transaction
between tenants and a land-
lord explained Klaver.
"This isn't a case of a
whole bunch of employees
losing their jobs because
they are going south," said
Klaver.
Currently Boyle and Isaac
have made a petition to keep
Bonnie's Restore and Dairy
Bar open, the list has more
than 60 residents from the
area.
"We will have to downsize
into a smaller building and
that's going to hurt us quite a
bit, because winter is
coming and we've got a lot of
fall clothes in storage," Boyle
said.
Jan Hawley, the Huron
East, economic develop-
ment officer, is aware of the
situation and she men-
tioned that there are open
spots for them to move to in
Seaforth.
"I have an inventory of
available vacant space,
sometimes because of the
size it might not be what
they're looking for," Hawley
said.
"In Huron East, I have the
luxury of having two down-
towns, so if they are looking
for space and there is noth-
ing that suits their needs in
Seaforth. I would love to
show them some space in
Brussels:'
As of now, Klaver plans to
rent the space out as soon as
possible, whereas Boyle and
Isaac are currently searching
for a new place for Bonnie's
Restore and Dairy Bar to call
home.
