Accident count at Line 36, Road 180 climbs
Postmedia Network
It seems the intersection at
Perth Road 180 and Line 36 has
established a deadly reputation.
Last Wednesday, July 29, around
7:40 p.m., a serious two -vehicle
crash took place at this intersec-
tion - the same location of an acci-
dent just one week earlier. In both
instances, the collisions took place
in broad daylight, and appears as
though drivers have failed to stop
at the stop sign on Line 36.
At least three people - a 62 -year-
old Huron East woman who was a
passenger in the latest incident;
and two teenagers who were also
passengers in the crash one week
earlier - are currently in serious
condition.
"The Perth County OPP can't
stress enough that motorists need
to be cognizant of their actions at
the over 1,000 stop sign controlled
intersections within Perth
County," said OPP Const. Kees
Wijnands in a press release. "Many
intersections have `two-way stops,'
which often control the crossing of
roads with speed limits of 80
km/h. The higher the speed, the
greater the possibility of serious
injury or death when drivers fail to
stop and yield at these locations.
"At stop sign controlled
intersections, you must come to a
stop, look, and avoid distractions.
Driving demands your full
attention."
Last Wednesday evening, police
investigation revealed that a 2007
Chevrolet Tahoe was travelling
northbound on Perth Road 180
and approached the intersection
at Line 36. A 2013 GMC Sierra
pickup truck travelling westbound
on Line 36 proceeded into the
intersection and collided with the
passenger side of the Tahoe. The
impact caused both vehicles to
enter and come to rest in a field on
the northwest corner of the
intersection.
The 61 -year-old male driver of
the Tahoe was transported to a
local hospital with minor injuries
while his 62 -year-old female pas-
senger was transported by air
ambulance to a London hospital
with major injuries.
Both Tahoe occupants were res-
idents of the Municipality of
Huron East. The 38 -year-old male
driver of the Sierra, a Wellesley
resident, was transported to a
local hospital with minor injuries.
Traffic was diverted around the
intersection until shortly after
midnight allowing for OPP West-
ern Region Technical Traffic
Investigators to investigate the
collision and for the vehicles and
debris to be cleared from the
scene. Investigation into this colli-
sion remains ongoing.
On July 22, a similar accident
occurred at the intersection in
question, where a Pontiac Vibe
was t -boned by an oncoming live-
stock truck while entering the
intersection from Line 36.
Although the driver of the truck
was unharmed, two occupants of
the Pontiac were air -lifted to a
London hospital with major inju-
ries. A third occupant, believed to
be the driver, has since been
released from hospital after suffer-
ing minor injuries.
