MVCA has enough money

Members of the Maitland
Valley Conservation Authority
walked in the doors of Sea-
forth's historic town hall to
notify council changes were
going to be made because of a
"lack of funding:'
Currently the Mill building
in Brussels is in dire need of
new boards and a dam. To
replace the boards it will cost
approximately $20,000 and
MVCA does not know how
they will come up with the
funds to do so. They are also
in a bind with money to
cover campgrounds and
other land projects.
"The funding we have to
work with is shrinking, so
we're saying we're only going
to be able to do a few things
and we are going to try to do
them really well," said Phil
Beard, general manager/sec-
retary treasurer at MVCA.
Beard explained his organi-
zation will be focusing pri-
marily on two areas, helping
the municipality with flooding
and erosion issues and assist-
ing land owners with conser-
vation matters. One of the
main concerns that MVCA
clarified was the flooding.
"It's because most munici-
palities built their town next
to rivers, except for maybe
Seaforth," said Beard.
He said Listowel, Luc -
know, and Harriston all
assembled their communi-
ties this way.
"So what happens is when

we get huge rains or spring
floods, buildings and houses
get flooded out," said Beard.
"Our climate is changing, the
chances of flooding are
greater and the magnitude is
going to also be greater:'
Jayne Thompson, commu-
nication coordinator for
MVCA, said as the years pass
floods are becoming more
unpredictable.
"We always thought about
spring time flooding, the
snow is melting and it's rain-
ing a lot, you could sort of
see the flood was coming,"
said Thompson.
"But not anymore, you
think about the rain we had
today and on the weekend,
with the changes to our local
climate, flooding can hap-
pen at any time of the year."
Thompson said that is why
there is building regulations
set in place to protect the
residents, so an event does
not occur like the one in
Alberta or what happened
with Hurricane Hazel.
The 2013, the Alberta flood
went down in history as one
of the most expensive natural
disasters in Canada. In 1954,
Hurricane Hazel also dented
the country with a flood leav-
ing thousands in southern
Ontario homeless and killed
more than 80 people.
"There's a lot of areas in
Huron East that flood, so we
want to make sure that they
have an emergency plan in
place to make sure the roads
are not blocked off when it
floods," said Beard.
