Hope Melady, 16, from Exeter, is one of five Canadians who were scouted to take part in HOBY'S World Leadership Con- gress (WLC) in Chicago. The annual international youth leadership event gives students the chance to engage with thought -leaders in various fields. "I've seen different issues within the community and my school that I did not like, so when I got the opportunity to go to this lead- ership event, I wasn't actually sure what it was," said Melady. "But I knew I wanted to make a difference." The seven-day event saw more than 400 ambassadors from every Seaforth Citizenship Awards' 2015 seaforrhr�aTrI THE SEAFORTH BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT AREA IS NOW ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR THE CITIZENSHIP AWARDS IN THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES: SERVICE TO SPORTS: A person that volunteers his or her time to sports organizations, or sports in general in Seaforth and area. CIVIC SERVICE: A person that belongs to a service club or community organization in which he or she contributes many hours of time for the betterment of the community. HUMANITARIAN SERVICE: A person who is considerate of mankind, and is willing to give his/her time to help other people. These awards are chosen based on the individual's contribution to the community in a VOLUNTEER CAPACITY. To submit nominations, write the name of the person you are nominating, which category you want them in, background information on this person and why you feel he or she should win. "I made friends from Turkey, China and all over the world," said Melady. "It was really amazing to learn about different cultures." With a cost of $1675 to enter the seminar, Melady admitted the trip as being a "considerable amount of money." On the other hand she said she would definitely apply for it again if that was possible." This elite opportunity is "kind of like a one-time deal thing," said Melady. But she is wishful it may lead to something greater in the future. After completing the pro- gram she received a certificate "In recognition of Outstanding Leadership Potential as Demon- strated and by the Desire to Learn and Share Knowledge with Respect for fellow Human Beings." The Grade 11 student said she learned a lot of useful informa- tion while staying at the event, which was at Loyola University Chicago. She also said she understands what the city of Chicago is presently going through. "There were kids from Chicago there that saw all of this stuff happening first hand, so they were there for the city,' said Melady. Since Jan 2015, Chicago wit- nessed approximately 264 homi- cides including 46 murders this month. The weekend Melady stayed at the place also known as the "Windy City" seven people were killed and 28 wounded. These are some of the examples that Mel- ady said she would like to improve. "I feel like there is generally negative connotation associated with today's youth, so I would like to see that change," said Melady. The Seaforth Optimist Club sponsored part of the finances involved with the WLC trip. The Optimist Club said they urge the town of Seaforth to contact them, if any local and surround- ing area people are ever in need of fundraising similar to Melady's.
