(Association of Bikers for Awareness, Train- ing and Education) and the CMC (Canadian Motorcycle Cruisers), will be participat- ing in a Motorcycle Aware- ness Campaign on May 22 and May 23. Last year, there were a large number of fatalities and injuries in the motorcy- cle riding community. Organizers hope, through awareness and education, to decrease or even eliminate those terrible statistics. The Motorcycle Aware- ness Campaign will kick off in Mitchell on St. Andrew Street May 22 from 7 to 9 p.m., and con- tinue on May 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in several other communities throughout southwestern Ontario, including: • Kincardine - Sobeys at Hwy 21 and Durham Street. These professionals will demonstrate their lifesav- ing techniques for acci- dent scenes with the hope of never having to use them. Members of the rid- ing clubs will hand out brochures of safety tips such as "look twice, save a life" for motorists, as well as safe riding courses for cyclists. Organizers invite remem- bers of the public to join them and help to spread the safety message. Before venturing onto the water- ways, it is recommended that boaters take the follow- ing steps: 1. Evaluate the condi- tion of your boat and the gear after enduring the winter season in storage, especially the safety gear that is required by law and is imperative for a safe and enjoyable day on the water. 2. Ensure you have your Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) - all recrea- tional boat operators must have their PCOC. 3. Know the waters in which you are operating. Keep up-to-date charts onboard your vessel and consult them. For a list of chart dealers, visit: www. charts.gc.ca. 4. The Canadian Coast Guard advises the marine public of hazards to navi- gation through broadcasts and written Notices to Shipping (NOTSHIPS). These NOTSHIPS, along with the marine weather forecast and other important navigational information, can be found at: http://www.ccg-gcc. gc. ca/e-navigation/index/ GreatLakesNavigational- Area. 5. Be aware of Weather conditions. Marine infor- mation, such as weather and Notices to Shipping are also available on the Coast Guard's Continuous Marine Broadcast, which can be monitored on VHF radio channels 21B, 23B, 28B and 83B, depending upon your location. For any marine assistance, contact the nearest Coast Guard Marine Communi- cations and Traffic Ser- vices Centre on VHF chan- nel 16. 6. Wear your lifejackets.
