The Seaforth Community Cen-
tre was brimming with the waft-
ing aromas of freshly brewing
soups and browning baked goods
this past weekend as the Souper
Saturday cooking competition
made its much -anticipated
annual return.
An estimated 350 local foodies
crammed into centre's auditorium
on April 11 to taste some of the
freshly prepared soups and poten-
tially place a bid on the baked
goods available at the always -pop-
ular cake and pie auction.
Since its inception six years prior,
the soup -making challenge has
emerged as one of the region's tast-
iest springtime treats, drawing
attendees from all over midwestern
Ontario, says organizer and co-
founder Herb McGowan.

community," he said, noting that
he owes his inspiration for the
event to a similar -styled fundraiser
held in nearby Stratford.
McGowan attributes Souper Sat-
urday's continued success to the
countless volunteer contributions
it receives - everything from the
hall space to the tasting cups are
donated -and ability to lure soup
lovers from across the region to
participate either as chefs or
tasters.
About 21 participating chefs put
forward their best bowls this year
in hopes of winning a Christine
Behnke Culinary Award in the cat-
egories of best clear, best creamed
and people's choice.
Judging the dishes was a celeb-
rity panel consisting of Huron -
Bruce MP Ben Lobb, local doctor
Heather Percival and Gail Fraser
from the Huron County Health
Unit.
Among the many dishes battling
out for culinary supremacy were a
hearty meatball concoction and a
sausage, cabbage and tomato
blend.
All proceeds from Souper Satur-
day go to the Seaforth Food Bank,
with last year's event raising
roughly $5,000 for the charity.
A completely volunteer driven
organization, the Food Bank pro-
vided aid to 3,200 people from all
across Huron East in
2014, McGowan said, adding that
the charity allocates 100 per cent of
its funding to purchasing food for
those accessing its services.
The other main organizers for
the first Souper Saturday were
Coun. Bob Fisher and Christine
Behnke, who passed away two
years ago. The competition awards
were renamed in her honour.
Souper Saturday is the result of
an extensive planning process,
with organizers saying prepara-
tions for this year's showing started
six months in advance.
