As the calendar slips into April
and the frenetic action of playoff
hockey begins to quiet, the Seaforth
Minor Hockey Association (SMHA)
prepares to wind down a 2014-2015
season that its president says
brought welcome new
developments.
In an interview with the Expositor,
Blaine Marks frames the past year of
a hockey in Seaforth as a great suc-
cess, while hailing the introduction
of a new senior men's team and the
amalgamation of the girls program as
positive changes that should prove
beneficial to players in the area.
While the Huron East Centenaires
may be an independent organiza-
tion, Marks says the close partner-
ship between the senior squad and
the SMHA "has been a highlight" to
the children and adults within the
association.
"Both organizations have formed a
brotherhood to showcase hockey for
all ages to enjoy" he said. "The Cen-
tenaires have been a very enjoyable
organization to team up with and
have contributed a lot to our minor
hockey program in many ways."
A proposed new juvenile team in
Seaforth - a development still in the
planning stages - will hopefully act
as a feeder system for the Cente-
naires, as well as provide another
opportunity for local kids to con-
tinue playing hockey under the
organization's banner, Marks says.
Meanwhile, the amalgamated
girls program, which draws upon
players from Seaforth, Clinton,
Blyth, Brussels, Hensall and Bay-
field, has grown to nine teams,
becoming one of the largest of its
kind in midwestern Ontario.
The program has proven to be
successful on the ice, with five teams
this season qualifying for the provin-
cial championship tournament to be
held later in April.
Marks says the vision for the pro-
gram is to allow all girls in the area
an opportunity to play hockey at
every skill level and every age group.
He also lavishes praise on the
association's "industry-leading"
concussion program that deals with
baseline testing and policies to allow
players a "safe return to play and
reintroduction to full play on their
respective teams."
The program, Marks says, owes its
existence to the continued coopera-
tion between the SMHA, McKillop
Mutual and Dr. Heather Percival.
