Mayor opposes support for recruitment efforts

Mayor Bernie MacLellan
says Huron East shouldn't
provide financial support to a
regional committee seeking
to recruit physicians to the
Wingham and District Hospi-
tal because it represents
competition to the munici-
pality's own efforts to attract
healthcare professionals.
"The bottom line is this
municipality put money into
recruiting. We're doing it
because we're competing
against...our neighbours
(and others) across the prov-
ince," he said at Huron East
council's March 17 meeting.
"Sorry but this one here is
everybody for themselves."
The mayor's comments
came as council debated a
letter from Wingham and
Area Health Professionals
Recruitment, which asked
Huron East for a nearly
$5,000 financial commit-
ment and to appoint a repre-
sentative to sit on the
regional committee.
Council ultimately voted
to receive and file the letter.
MacLellan expressed res-
ervations about providing
assistance to a neighbouring
municipality, noting that the
last time Huron East was
attempting to attract a doc-
tor to the community, it
faced competition from
Goderich and Central
Huron, among others.
Coun. Nathan Marshall,
however, cautioned that
ratepayers in the municipal-
ity would still benefit from
healthcare services provided
in Wingham, adding that
some residents have family
doctors based out of Wing -
ham, Blyth, Exeter and other
nearby communities.
Coun. David Blaney,
though, stressed that there is
a stark difference with sup-
porting healthcare infra-
structure that serves the
broader region and provid-
ing financial support for a
neighbouring municipality
to compete with their own
recruitment efforts.
He said that Huron East
already supports hospitals
across the area but the Wing -
ham recruitment committee
is essentially asking the
municipality to help bankroll
their efforts to compete with
them for healthcare talent.

pay to help them compete
for the doctor that we're
competing for," Blaney said.
"That just makes no logical
sense to do."
MacLellan also said that
attracting physicians to rural
Ontario has become "a lot
easier" in recent years, as
doctors increasingly seek the
sort of arrangements pro-
vided by smaller centres.
"Doctors are now looking
for these type of setups pro-
vided that you got the foun-
dation," he added.
