•Tobi Burgess has probably. done
as much work with stilbestrol•- as
anyone in North America: The On-
tario Agricultural Collegeresearch-

growth stimulant in the last • year
has been: -
4pproximately.20c worth of stil-

tween -20- and,
e-tween-20--anti 30 per cent, increas-
ed gains.

There is—no- -difference '-in--"re
sponse- between implanted stilbes
trp1 and stilbestrol administered in.
the feed:
There is.. a good :indication 'that•
there is' not much advantage to re=
implanting at 100 ,days when you
are feeding for a 200 -day period,
Dr. Burgess has •set ltp,_a" list
of suggestions for implantingand.
feeding stilbestrol.
For steers that are going' on
grass, T recommend a'24 milligram
implant, whereas steers that are
to be fattened in the feedlot on a
high:grain ration do best on a 36
milligram, implant,” says the re-
searcher; -:r
His suggestions for a•, 100 -day
feeding period with stilbestrol as
an implant and 'fed orally. are:,
"Stay with the 36 milligram im
plant when you're feeding stilbes-
troI, but feed .it. at a' level of 10
milligrams per head per day, which
over a 100 -day; period -adtis', up. io -
1,000 milligrams:" -
"There is 'a big difference in the .
amount used, but sinceit's fairly
cheap, it's, not :a major, factor.; For
instance, if you haven't got a.load-
ing chute or pen to hold steers for'
implants, or have to pay veterin-
arians for implanting, you might
want to feed rather than •.Supply
stilbe`strol through an implant," he '+
says.
Ott,' overdosing, Burgess says:
i'You Will probably run into side
effects like elevated tailheads, .flat-
tened rump, and depressed loins,
which 'inane the conformation" ;of
an animal less desirable." .

"After .the houses were,in use
