he who owned the East 50 of Let 21 from -1854 till he sold to
Timothy Maloney in 1870 and 'moved to Seaferth, Patrick
Roach owned it next, and the, others who have had it are the
same as these Who. have owned the North 25 of Lot 20..
• From 1856, Hon. John Hilli3rard Cameronowned .the
West 50, This. same Cameron was Gys,hd Master of the
Orange Order when the Prince of Wales, later King Edward
VII, visited. Canada in, September, 1860. A dispute was stir -

came to"Hibbert he .W.'as.left.With.relatives and waSthete till

also Agnes" and Theresa when quite young. The other .ten

land, took up Lot 25 and died here in 1861: At this tune there
was only a footpath back. the sideroad; The day. before the
funeraI,;Jarnes. AtkinSon and other neighbors choppedand
cleared away small trees to make a road for'the ,undertalcer,
who 'came the next 'morning; with his ox and :sleigh to take
the body to the church and graveyard at Irishtown.

Daniel 13arry, Michael's son; was born at Scarboro,'Ont.,
on June 21;1854, :and came .vvith his Parents from there to
Lot 23. When a yonng lad Dan often hitched a team of oxen
and hauled a load of fuel wood Over to the old grand Trunk
Railway to raise a bit of ready cash„._Another journey -he
often made was to the .one and only, mill in the district at
Egmendiille with, Wheat to be ground. into flour_In_191
Dal?mariiedJohanna. O'Reilly; and lived on the South 50 of
this lot till they moved to Seaforth in. 1925. Ile returned a
few years before his death, to live with his daughter in Hib-
bert. rn 1955 he, passed away in St; 1Wri'y's Hospital, Lon:
don, in his 101st- year, the oldest resident :of Hibbert Town.;

a day laborer, in the earlier days; rived in an extra house on

Lot,Twenty-ix ,
From 1848 Thomas' McGoey. OWned Lot 26 Until he went
to Toledo, Ohio,.around 1870. His with was Mary Melady, a
daughter of Nicholas. Melady. Thomas . McGoey was the
second reeve of Hibbert Town$hip, and, held the office in the
years 1851 and 1852. Other 'o-vvners have been ,Joseph Mont-
gonierY; Janes ;Montgomery; William Allen (R),. Charles
• Shea (R), Patrick' "Paddy" Stapleton (R), Jelin O'Reilly,
lames O'Reilly and Joe O'Reilly. Dan O'Connor got the South
50from the O'Reillys. The'North 25 Of it now belongs to
Dan's Estate, and the other 25 to his son, John O'Connor;
'and John Kemp has it all -rented for pasture. -
Michael Purseli, a cousin of the -ether Pursells, liVed in
house on this lot in the early days, and cut wood for john
Steen and other. He was an unusually large man, Weighing
around four hundred- pounds. He later was a hotelkeeper,
both in Stratford and in Seaforth.' While in Seaforth he first
had the Grip House, and later also the Queen's Rotel, in the
late 90.'$.

of 'County Clare, Ireland, Janies and the present

. was believed he was stealthily hit by a hidden :iron boot -jack
• and the blow preyed fatal. While there. was not too much

Robert Bell And his family Came to Canada from, County
Ca0ven, Ireland, and first settled east of Toronto .' Later, near -
31" all family lived in this cbminunitY. The Parents and

It was Maxwell Bell and. hi s brother-in-lawjlenrY Gray,

farms. The others came shortly after.; Only one remained

thusiastic Orangemen.. ,
Maxwell Bell married ;Catherine Vincent, and by 1854
had his grant and release' for 'the South 50 of Lot 1,, -and ,a
little later the North 50 of Lot ,1,. Concession 6, where he
lived: Since then this 50 on Concession 5 has been in the Bell
name; hilt' no one ever lived On, this part ,of Lot 1. Owners
since Maxwell I3ell have been his som, Robert Bell:: Robert's
Widow and daughter, Genella.; theri, HOLlert's twin Sons' till
Lorne passedaway. recently.... Lloyd is the:, Present. owner.
The farm is rented each year and. usedlor pasture;
The North.50; from :1847, was Owned by William Bell till
he Sold to John Linton.. Bell Was township reeve in,1859 and
1860. Other, owners havebeen Gibson Linton,a son of John:
John Walker, 'a 'cattle drover ;IIVIrs. John Walker, and Alvin
Kenip. While John Linton Was the:owner,. Mrs. Allan (Mary
-Waison'and '1VriChael Pehlke,' both 'at different; times,
lived'in a log house .on, the 'corner,of "tlie lot. The barn here
was boUght by John Gray, and was Moved to his fatal (Lot
4), farther vvest on ..this same concession. Ilenry.Watson-thr,
a time in the 70's lived in another log house on this North 50
pf John Lin -ten's.

widow, Mrs.' BoleS. Prom 1866 this lot has been owned by

It was-in.1856' that Robert Bell got his grant 'and telease
for Lot 3, hilt he had lived here from an earlier date: He
was a township liquor, inspector in 1854, \ It Was here he died
in,,.1869, aged 82 Years. He and his wife Elizabeth had " a
large family,naely : Ann. (Mrs. Henry' Gray), William,
David; Maxwemll,:Elizabeth (IVIts..' William Gray), John,
ah:(Mrs: Alex Linton) Robert, Margaret (Mrs. John Wat-
son) and.Alexander. In 1857 David and :Alexander BelI.eaoli
got 3315'3 acres cif the lot, leaving Robert with only an equal -
amount with ;the other two." ,

trail Winding among thestumps, Robert's son, David, while
driving alone in the lonely wilderness, moat have sensed that

trail semetime later, it was fund -that he had tied. histeam

death of his parents and brother, David; he moved to,, Turn

law, Alex Linton, Whose :Wife was Sarah Bell. Others, on the
lot have been George lemp,. Alex Linton's son, Dan, and Alex
Linton, a cousin of Dan; These Were all renters. The owners
since then have been John A. Thompson,- John Cornish,
bert Cornish and Glen Smith. '
