Quiek action on the part of a
Bell 'Telephorie operator played a
major role saving the life of' a
Saforth woman Friday, when
she summoned neighbors to in-
vestigate screams she -heard-when
she. answered a call. Had she ;not
acted quickly and' called for help,
MISS Violet Piper, who an invalid,
could have been burned to _death.
Miss lean Charters was onduty
in the Seeforth Hell °Mee Friday
afternoon when a ealletaMe from
the Piper resideti&eon Side Street.
Realizing something. was,, Wrong
When ' she heard screams, Miss.
Charters called „Mr. and Mrs, W.
J. Cleary, who live across the
street from the. Piper house, ,to
investigate.
and Mrs. Cleary 'rushed into
the Piper home and found it filled
with smoke. Entering the bed-
room, they found Miss' Piper, suf-
fering severe burns. Her clothing
hatl been buract .Off; and theY
wrapped -her blankegs: Dr. Met
Master ancl an ambulance were
tailed by Mrs. 'Cleary, and Miss
Piper was renloved to Scott Mem-
orial Hospital.
Mr. Cleary extinguished the fire
in the bedroom. Alt the bedding
was burned. Mr. Cleary Stated/that
had they been a few minutes later,'
the :whole house would have been
destroyed. .
Apparently Miss Piper, Who was
alone at the time at her residerice
on Side 'Street, had been smoking
in. bed .% when the ,bectclothing
caught fire: She managed toreach
the telePhone, ibut was unable ,to
Speak coherently.
