With Sweden having just an- nounced intention to take part in the Scotch Cup, what does this mean to our Canadian curl- ing champions? It might be interesting to take a peek at the growth of the roaring game in that coun- try. Canadians of Scottish an- cestry will be proud to know that it was none other than the missionary zeal of their own race that spread the gospel of curling in Scandinavia. Just as Scots settlers intro- duced the Royal and ancient pastime in Upper and Lower Canada, the Red River Valley, New York and Chicago, a few Scotch families who settled in Uddevalla, a small town in Western Sweden, brought curl- ing into that country as early as 1846. For six winters they tossed stones on frozen lakes while the natives watched their weird antics and cries with un- bridteci curiosity. In 1852 the first curling club known as the Bohuslandska Curling - klubben was organized. For half a century the game was restricted to a few local communities nearby but in 1901 curlers were invited to Stock - New Challenge For Canada's Top Rink holm to demonstrate their strange sport in an event called "Nordiska Spelen." /336 1916 the Swedish Curling Association was formed with three clubs as members. From this meagre be- ginning the country now boasts 76 clubs with 2,200 members. Today 60 towns, villages and cities have curling facilities and approximately 150 sheets of ice. However, necessity has dictated the marriage of skat- ing, hockey and curling, with the rock -tossers usually being wedged in when time or space is available. Unlike Canada, where the game is played indoors in more than 2,000 clubs reserved ex- clusively for curling, there is not a single indoor rink for curlers in Sweden. According to Sven Albinsson, the secre- tary of the Swedish Curling Un- ion, there are only four centres in the country with artificial outdoor rinks exclusively for curlers. In the northern part of -this progressive nation where the climate is favorable, natural ice prevails. In the South, where the weather cycle has been bringing milder temperatures in late years, the game is play- ed mostly on artificial hockey rinks by an agreement with the Swedish Sports Alliance - a national body which through government funds is responsible for providing sports facilities of all types. The great need in Sweden to- day is for artificial indoor curl- ing ice so that the caprice of the weatherman can be ignor- ed. Last year a bonspiel at Are with one hundred rinks enter- ed failed to get started because of the three-day storm. But latest word from stately Stock-. holm is that plans are now un- der way for the first of the much-needed indoor curling clubs. The Swedish champions will provide added color to the In- ternational Curling Series for they will be tremendously en- thusiastic players. The air of the Scottish ice rinks in Falkirk and Edinburgh will ring with the shouts of the Scandinavian skip calling for "Inlaggning" (drawing), "Bort med garden" (take off the guard), "Ligg mot den" (lie up against it) and "Byt plats" (change places with it). Like the Scots, our Swedish friends will be armed with their "coos" or brushes but they will also come with great friendship and goodwill, Tar#traoki O15'I TOAA Magi .
