Pasture Means
Leaner Cuts
It doesn't pay to carry grass
to market hogs.
This was the conclusion
reached through tests at the
Canada Department of Agricul-
ture's experimental farm at
Agassiz, B.C.
D. M. Bowden reported that
the hogs increased their rate of
gain , over hogs without grass
and over hogs on `pasture, all
three groups being on self -fed
concentrate. But having grass
brought to them daily did not
significantly rhange the con-
sumption of concentrate nor the
carcass quality of the animals,
and the extra labor involved
made the system uneconomical.
Mr. Bowden did note that the
group on pasture produced a
greater percentage of lean cuts,
an important fact because this
should raise the percentage of
Grade A's and thereby bring'in
more revenue both through
quality premiums and because
the Grade A price is much more
than for Grade B's at the time
of writing.
The pigs on pasture gained
at the same rate as the dry -lot
pigs without grass and had
more lean cuts and Iess trim-
med belly.
The pigs were raised from 50
td' 200 pounds in drylot pens
or individual paddocks on pas-
ture complete with sun -shade.
Grass about eight inches high
was cut and fed in individual
boxes to one group.
Average daily gain of pigs in
drylot was 1.40 pounds; in dry -
lot with grass 1.51; and on pas-
ture 1.37, Concentrate consum-
ed per 100 pound gain averaged
respectively 448 pounds; 430
pounds (plus 25 pounds of dry
matter); and 438 pounds.
Percentage lean cuts in the
carcass averaged 61.2 for dry -
lot; 61.3 for tlrylot with grass,
and 63.7 for pasture. Pigs fed
grass consumed an average of
0.37 pounds per day on a dry
matter basis.
If you can't get behind a
movement for the good of the
community, the least you can
do is get out from in front of it.
George: "So you 'proposed to
your girl in the garage. What
happened?"
Jack: "She wouldn't let me
back out."

TIMELY TIPS -
Keep your cattle away from
junk piles where you've thrown
old paint cans and car batter-
ies, advises Dr. Howard Neely,
extension veterinarian at OVC.
Even a- small amount of lead
can be fatal to cattle. Some
orchard and vegetable sprays,
contain lead, too. Another pre-
caution: Don't use leaded paints
around the barn, on fences, or
in pens. '
Sitting at home, having a
quiet evening, were two spin-
ster sisters. Suddenly one look-
ed up from the paper she was
reading and commented :
"There's an article here telling
of the death of a woman's third
husband. She has had all three
of them cremated."
"Isn't that life for you?" said
the other. 'Some of us can't
even get one husband; while
others have husbands to burn?'
