PopI BROWN MITES Insecticides that have destroyed some pests have favored the in- crease of the brown mite, says W. L. Putman, . of the Canada Depart- ment of Agriculture's research lab- oratory at Vineland, Ontario. The brown mite has become more abundant in some orchards as a result of using captan in place of sulpfi ii-. DDT sprays used against the oriental fruit moth have also caused the mite to in- crease in numbers. If this peach pest becomes numerous enough- to create a problem, sulphur sprays will quickly control it, says Mr. Putman. It sucks the juice from leaves causing speckling .as if by dust. Most of the mites return to the bark of older twigs to moult and lay their eggs and damage is us- ually restricted to a few leaves near older wood.
