Pat- erson, aterson, a resident of the village most of her life, passed away in Clinton Public Hospital on Thurs- day, Dec. 15, in her 74th year. When health permitted, she was active in organizations of Carmel Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member, a former member of the Women's Missionary Society and of the choir, and a former member of Hensall's Women's In- stitute, being one of the first mem- bers when it was organized. She was the former Lilly Dora Ortwein, and had spent most of her life here. Surviving are her husband; one brother, Alonzo Ort- wein, Crosswell, Mich., and one sister, Mrs. G. M. Drysdale, Hen- sall. Largely attended funeral serxives were held from the Bonthron Fun- eral Chapel on Sunday, conducted by Rev. G. C. Vais, of Galt, a former minister of Carmel Church. Burial was in Hensall Union Ceme- tery, and pallbearers were Clar- ence Reid, George Hess, Walter Spencer, Howard Scene, Norman Jones and James A. Foster. Floral tributes were many and lovely. Personnel Supervisor: "What previous work and experience have you had?" Applicant: "All kinds; I was a secretary. All I had to do was look like a girl, think like a man, act like a lady and work like a dog." SPECIAL CHRIPMAS PROGRAM. HIGHLIGHTS WOMEN'S INSTITUTE At the Hensall Woolen's Insti- tute Christmas meeting, held Wed- nesday evening, Dec. 14, in the Legion Hall, attended by 50 mem- bers and 13 guests, a special col- lection of $22.00 was received, which will be forwarded to the Salvation Army and Protestant Orphans Home. London. President Mrs. Fred Beer pre- sided for the meeting and Christ- mas greetings from the different branches in South Huron were on display. Mrs. T. C. Coates took the chair for the program, which included carol singing under direction of Miss Greta Lammie, with soloist Mrs. Sim Roobol, singing "Silent Night" in her native language— Holland. A delightful play, "Neigh- bors," portrayed by the following cast, Mrs. W. Dilling, Mrs, T. Sher- ritt, Mrs. George Armstrong, Mrs. Lorne Chapman and Mrs. E. El- gie, was ably presented and well received, and was under the di- rection of Miss M. Ellis. Mrs. Coates, Mrs. Hess and Miss Lam- mie sang two lovely trios, "Ere a Rose Lay Blooming" and "We Wish You' a Merry Christmas." Mrs. E. R. Davis ,demonstrated the artistic art of gift wrapping and decorating, presenting some very lovely and smart -ideas. Winlaw gave an inspiring address, speaking on the topic, "What Christmas Means." Mrs. Alf Ross presided for the W.A. meeting. Mrs. Alvin Cole conducted the devotional, using the theme, -"Christmas Festival." A quartette, composed of . Mrs. Ross, `Mrs. R. Tayldr, Mrs. C. Winlaw and Mrs. T. Brintnell, sang "Star of the East." During the business session, $25.00 was voted to the M. and M. Fund. Mrs. Clarence Coleman was appointed to look after packing bags of treats for the Sunday School scholars, and boxes for the shut-ins will be packed over the weekend, Mrs. Jack Brintnell and Mrs. Alvin Cole will decorate the church for Christ- mas. The treasurer for the WMS re- ported that $200, their allocation, had been forwarded. Mrs. Winlaw favored with a piano solo, and Mrs. C. Coleman presided. Kppen W.L Holds Concert 'Children of pre-school age were special guests of Kippen East Wo- men's Institute Christmas meeting held Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 14, at the home of Mrs. Arthur Varley, with Mrs. Wilmer Broad - foot co -hostess. First vice-president Mrs. W. J. F. Bell, who presided, welcomed the fifty adults and children. The roll call was "a family Christmas custom." Mrs. Ross Chapman told a Christmas story, "The Faithful Ranger," and Mrs. Stewart Pep- per gave* a demonstration on the making of a pointsetta. Linda Bell, Brenda Finlayson and Darlene Mc- Kay gave recitations. A special collection was taken, which will be forwarded to the Children's Aid Society, Goderich. Miss Gail Fin- layson and Miss Carold Varley were presented gifts for obtaining County Honors in club work. Mrs. Russell Brock was the win- ner of a Christmas cake, made by Mrs. Verne Alderdice. Sunday School $ Holds Concert The Sunday School rooms of the United Church, lovely with Christ- mas emblems, was the setting Tuesday -evening, Dec. 13, for the annual Sunday School Christmas concert, with a large attendance. Rev. C. R. Winlaw was chairman for the evening and gave the chair- man's address. Miss Greta Lam- mie directed carol singing. THEME FOR ANNUAL CONCERT The Sunday School rooms of Carmel Presbyterian Church, Hen- sall, lovely with Christmas decora- tions, was the setting for the an- nual Christmas concert, with a large attendance. Mr. Clarence Volland, superintendent, was chair- man for the program, A recita- tion of "Welcome" was given by Shelley Bonthro. Mrs. Clarence Volland's class presented a dia- logue, "Mrs. Christmas," and a recitation by Sheila Sangster. Reci- tations were given by Dorothy Skea, Mary Thomson, Beatrice Thomson, Chris Vanstone and Gor- don Wright. Mrs. ,William Brown's class pre- sented a dialogue, "Christmas Bells"; chorus, "Silent Night," by Mrs` Hoy's and Mrs. Brown's class; "Hidden Christmas Gift" was presented by Mrs. Brown's class. Mrs. Harry Hoy's class pre- sented a number entitled, "Mr. Nobody," followed by a recitation, "Washing," by the girls of the class. A chorus reading by Mrs. Hoy's class read Matthew Scrip- ture reading. Several Christmas carols were sung with everyone joining in, Mrs. Beaton's class presented a reading by John Skea; recitations by Michael Hoy, Charles. Schwalm, Mervyn Bell, and Rose Marie Campbell. Mrs. Fred Bonthron's class sang a chorus, "0 Come, All Ye Faithful." Mrs. Gordon Schwalm's class presented: readings by Bonnie Peters and Cheryl Little; Barbara and Marjorie Schwalm, piano' duet; readings by Wendy Moir, Colleen Baynham and Caroline Campbell, and a chorus, "The Cherry Tree Carol." Joe Vanstone gave an of- fertory reading. Mrs Harvey Hyde's class presented a 'panto - mine, with Mrs. William Brown and Mrs. Baynham, soloists. A colored film strip entitled, "The Christ Child," was present- ed, with music. Mrs. Bev. Beaton presented her class with memory work certificates. The program concluded with a recitation by Michael Sangster. The teachers served refreshments. To Observe Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Stewart McQueen, of Richmond Street South, Hensall, will be holding open house bn the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary, for relatives, friends and neighbors, Wednesday, Dec. 28, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and ,7 p.m. to 9 p.m. No gifts, please. Church Chimes To Be Heard This week will see the inaugura- tion of something, new for Hensall United Church and for the village. The Official Board of the local United Church planned to install Sound amplification equipmentfor the church auditorium. Two mem- bers, who prefer to remain an- onymous, contributed funds to pro- vide for an enlargement of this equipment, so as to enable it to be used for exterior amplification as well.
