The Huron Expositor, 1960-12-08, Page 3HURONDALE INSTITUTE HONORS GRANDMOTHERS AS GUESTS Grandmothers were special guests at In- stitute's ieWomen's tute's Novembermeeting, held in Thames Road United Chureb, Wednesday, Nov. 30, each inem- ber bringing someone's grandmoth- er as their guest. Prize for the eldest grandmother went to Mrs. C. Frayne; youngest grandmother,. Mrs. William Maver; grandmother with the most grandchildren, Mrs, William Rhode. Presentations were made by Mrs. Lilliam Lamport, historical research and current. ev- ents convener, who was in charge of the wograme. The roll call was, "Name an old-fashioned cus- tom you are pleased has vanish- ed." Mrs. Archie Etherington com- mented on the motto, "There is nothing more pleasing to the old than to be remembered by the young." President Mrs, Richard Etherington conducted the busi- ness. It was decided to send a dele- gate to the Training School in God- erich which is to be held in Janu- ary at the Sunset Hotel. It was announced Achievement Day is to be, held January 21 in Clinton for the girls that have taken the project, "The Club Girl Enter- tains," Mrs. Alvin' Moir was asked to give a few remarks on the millin- ery course that about seven 17 ladies had taken part in. Mrs. Harry Strang gave highlights of the bus trip to Goderich, with an enjoyable day reported. Mrs. Wm. Sims reviewed current events and gave a few historical comments on some of the buildings that are being removed in Exeter. Mrs. Moir gave a splendid report on the London Area Conference which she and Mrs. Bruce Tuckey at- tended. A demonstration on "The Third Meal" was presented by Mrs. Jean Morgan, Mrs. William Ethering- ton and Mrs. R. Etherington, who had taken this short course re- cently. Mrs. Lee Webber, Mrs. Wilfred Hunkin, Mrs. Robert Maver and Mrs. Carmen Cann rendered a quartette, and Mrs, Jean Morgan and Mrs. Agnes Sillery, a duet. Lucky chair and cup prizes were won by Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Wise- man. The December meeting will be held Friday, the 9th, at 8:30 p.m. in the Legion Hall, Exeter. Hur- ondale Institute will be host to nine branches in the form of a Christmas party. LAC Donald Hedden, a patient at Sunnybrook, Toronto, where he is receiving treatment for serious back injuries from a car accident last summer, is expected to spend Christmas with his wife and three small daughter at his home at RCAF Station Clinton. He will be confined to a wheel chair. Mrs. Margaret Vair, Brucefield, left Saturday to visit with relatives in New York. Miss Janet Doig wast' Omitted to the Queensway Nursing Home here on Sunday. Winners of the Christmas cake draw held Saturday night, Dec. 3, at Crest Hardware, were: Ross Christian, Hensall, and Mrs. Erma Lowery, Exeter. Reeve John Hen- derson drew the winning tickets. The project, sponsored by the Hensall Kinette Club, was very successful. The cakes were made by Mrs. Robert Reaburn. and Mrs. Frank Ellwood, Kinette 'members. Mrs. Doig, who is a patient in Scott Memorial Hospital, Seaforth, is reported to be in fair condition and slowly improving. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Thiel, of Zurich, visited with Mr. and Mrs. Howard Finkbeiner and family on Sunday evening. Mr, and Mrs. James Drummond of Toronto, visited during last week with Mrs, James Drummond, of Kippen, at St. Joseph's Hospital, London. The Sunday School teachers of St. Andrew's United Church met at the home of Mrs. John Sinclair to make arrangements for a Christmas concert on Dee. 19th. Mrs. Edna Oswald, of Zurich, who ,has been confined to Scott Memorial Hospital, Seaforth, with pneumonia, is at present con- valescing with her granddaughter, Mrs. Howard Finkbeiner. Paul Lapointe, 30, RC AF Station Clinton was travelling south when he struck an icy patch on the road, causing him to lose control of the car which careened into the ditch and struck a fence post. There were no injuries. OPP H. Reid, of Exeter detachment, who investigated, stated damages amounted to '$100. WI To Have Christmas Meet The Christmas meeting of Hen- sall Women's Institute will be held in the Legion Hall Wednesday, December 14, at 8:15 p.m. Roll call will be a cash donation. A skit, "Neighbors," directed by Miss Ellis, will be presented, and a demonstration will be given and Christmas carols will be sung. Program conveners are Mrs, T. Coates and Miss Greta Laramie; hostesses, Miss) Phyllis Case and Mrs. Pearl Koehler. The Ladies' Aid of First Presby- terian Church held their Christmas meeting Tuesday afternoon with Miss Jean Scott presiding. Mrs Reg Kerslake opened the meeting with a poem, "The Peace of Beth- lehem." The hymn, "0 Little Town of Bethlehem," was sung. Mrs. H. Whyte read the minutes of the November meeting and Mrs. Ivy Butt gave the treasurer's report, which showed a very successful year. During the business discus- sion it was decided to serve a sup- per to the Sunday School children, December 19. —Mrs. Mrs. 3. F. Scott told a beautiful Christmas story, "The Holy Night" which was very much enjoyed. "Joy To the World" was sung, fol- lowed by the Lord's Prayer in uni- son. A social time followed. Mrs. D. H. The Family Life Centre was gaily decorated for the Christmas sea- son by Mx's. A. fI. Daynard and Mrs. Arthur Kemp. Mrs. Gerald Agar opened the bazaar and wel- comed the guests. LUCIS ISLAND MISSIONARY IS HENSALL MEETING SPEAKER MissIris Castle, missionary on furlough from St. Lucia Island, 500 miles' from Trinidad, was guest speaker at the Christmas meeting of the Women's Missionary Society of Hensall United Church, held on Thursday afternoon, Dec. 1. Her address was enhanced by pictures, showing the life and customs of the people of the island, banana and sugar plantations. The island is 28 by 14 miles, and is noted for fishing. Miss Castle was dressed in costume that the St. Lucians wear, which took 14 yards of ma- terial to make. The speaker, who is a sister of Mrs. John Alexan- der, of RR 2, Hensall, was intro- duced by Mrs. N. E. Cook and thanked by Mrs. George Arm- strong. -. George Armstrong's group charge of the meeting. Sac - MRS. MARGET GAULD KIPPEN — Mrs. Margaret Ann Gauld, 93, former missionary in Formosa and widow of the late Rev. William Gauld, died in Guelph on Sunday at the home of her daughter, Dr. Flora Little. Mrs. Gauld was a native of Kippen, the former Margaret Ann Meats. She and her husband went to Formosa in 1892. Mr. Gauld died in 1923. She continued missionary work un- til 1929, when she went to Guelph to live with her daughter. She was active in various organizations of Chalmers' United Church. Surviving are two two other daughter, Miss Greta Gauld, in Formosa, and Mrs. D. H. Stevens in England. • The body rested at the home of Mrs. Flora Little when service was conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 6th, in Chalmers' United Church.
