What was probably the last
hitching post in front of an area
store disappeared a few weeks ago
as a program of modernization
got under at Friend and Whetham's
store in Dublin.
The 92 -year-old building has had
its face lifted, and in the process
the entrance through which have
passed several generations of dis-
trict shoppers, disappeared, to be
replaced with a modern front of
glass and aluminum.
The new entrance, in addition to
providing a most attractive ap-
pearance to the building, results
in an easier approach. The wide
free -swinging door opens onto en-
closed steps and provides ready
access to the store and the locker
storage area.
Erected in 1868 by Joseph Kidd,
the building was one of the first
brick structures in what was then
the village of Carronbrook. For
largest business in the community.
many years the building housed the
Almost everything required could
be procured—furniture, hardware,
dry goods, groceries, boots and
shoes, crockery, liquor, millinery„
tailored and ready-made clothes.
A branch of the ,Dominion Tele-
graph Company was located in the
building, which also housed for a
time the village post office. In
the late 70's a siding was built
from the railway track to the back
of the store, making it easier to
unload large hogsheads of molas-
ses and other heavy merchandise.
The firm of Friend and Whet-
ham,
hetham, who had purchased the but-
cher business of Gerald Holland,
moved it into the building Which
they had obtained from the Moly-
neaux family. The alterations to
the exterior of the building, now
completed, are the most recent
move in a long-range programe of
improvements which has been car-
ried out in recent years.
Specializing in. custom butcher-
ing, the firm has complete facili-
ties, including a modern locker -
freezer service.
Charles Friend - and Andy Whet -
ham both had served as officers
in the Air Force, and following
their retirement joined forces and
purchased the Holland business.
A native of England, Charles
Friend served in the RAF in India,
Burma and Siam. Wounded, he
was sent to Canada on course;
where he met his wife, a nursing
sister in the RCAF. Mr. and Mrs.
Friend have four daughters.
Andy Whetham grew up in Bur-
lington and as a youth learned
the butchering business. Follow-
ing four years' service as an air
gunner in the RCAF, he joined
forces with Charles Friend— their
wives are sisters—to come to Dub-
lin. Mr. and Mrs. Whetham have
a daughter living in Kitchener, and
a son, Ken, who is associated in
the business.
THIS IS HOW the Friend and Whetham block looked more than
80 years ago. The illustration is from a wood cut which appeared
on an invoice of Joseph Kidd & Son, issued in 1877, and now in
possession of Friend and Whetham.

WORLD'S MOST POPULOUS
AREA
Probably the most densely popu-
lated region in the world, accord-
ing to the Book of Knowledge, is
the Chinese coastal province of
Kiangsu. Including the great, cities
of Shanghai, Nanking and Soochow,
it contains over 40,000,000 people
in less than 35,000 square miles.
Portugal is about the same size,
but its population is only 82 mil-
lion.
