Spruce -up At Home
With the advent of the festive
season and its whirl of holiday en-
tertaining, do you ever find your-
self taking a guest -eye view of
your home?
Sometimes this is pretty dis-
couraging. You wonder how you
could have overlooked all the lit-
tle defects your eyes suddenly dis-
cover. The worn patch of paint by
the door . those dull looking
lamp shades . . . the ring on the
coffee table ... none of them ma-
jor but all detracting from the
kind of impression you want your
home to give.
You may decide despairingly
that if time permitted nothing less
than a complete decoration job
will do. Well, time does permit
before Christmas engulfs you. The
late fall and early winter is ac-
tually a sensible time for interior
painting. The garden work is fin-
ished and time is more plentiful
now than it will be next spring.
If you use latex paint you won't
have to open a window even
though the weather is cold or raw.
Latex paints have no "painty" od-
our, go on fast with brush or roll-
er, and dry to the touch in min-
utes, You can latex -paint a whole
room and have the pictures back
on the wall the same day if nec-
essary. In fact, the actual paint-
ing may take less time than you
spend trying to select a color
scheme from the wide range avail-
able in latex paints.
F,requently you can give an en-
tire room a fresh look without re-

BRUSSELS HORTICULTURAL GROUP
SPONSORS CHRITMAS DECORATIONS
The regular meeting of Brussels
Horticultural Society was held in
the Library with 28 members and
18 visitors present. Mit. Gemmell
and Mrs. L. Nichol were maven -
sorting to a complete redecora-
tion. Accessories like pictures, for
example, can be given a new im-
portance if the frames are re-
painted a different color to com-
plement or contrast pleasingly
with the subject and the room.
Or parchment shades take on a
dramatically different look with
a coat of latex paint.
Even if your problem is a table
or chair whose finish is marred,
you no longer have to wait until
you can afford the money for a
professional refinishing job or the
time for a long and tedious do-it-
yourself project, Once considered
a man's job,, more and more wo-
men are tackling furniture refin-
ishing and finding it the most re-
warding of hobbies, A possible
reason for this trend is the de-
velopment of improved paint re-
movers. Those with a methylene
chloride base have been a boon
to amateur refinishers. Sold under
various brand names, these paint
removers are safe to use and
quickly lift the most stubborn fin-
ish from the original wood sur-
face, leaving it clean, ready for
resanding and refinishing. A com-
plete range of commercial wood
stains and finishes are available
so you can duplicate the original
finish or apply the new one of
your choice.
So let your eye be as critical as
it pleases. Paint ... pictures ..
lamp shades . . . furniture . . .
any of these spruce -up projects
are easy on your budget and time,
And all of them will give your
home an added sparkle that even
the Christmas tree can't dim.
BETTER
HEALTH'
By C. A. DEAN, M.D.
MEDITORIAL: Last fall the In-
stitute of Life Insurance released
some interesting statistics about
obesity and its effect on mortality.
There is nothing surprising in the
report but it emphasizes the im-
portance of maintaining "normal"
or "slightly below normal" weight.
Five million people were involv-
ed in this study which covered a
25 -year period. -It showed that
inch for inch we weigh more than
our parents. Those who are 20
pounds above average incur a ten
per cent higher death rate. This is
increased to 25 per cent at 25
pounds and to 50 per cent for
those 50 pounds above average.
The chief causes of the increased
mortality are diabetes, gall• blad-
der disorders and heart disease.
The lowest mortality rate was
found in those who are 15 to 20
pounds below average weight.
The lesson is evident, We must
all strive for average or prefer-
pably slightly below average weight.
In this way we can eliminate all
the complications of obesity.
(Q.): "How serious is frozen
shoulder? What treatment would
you recommend?"
Mrs. L. D.
(A.): Frozen shoulder is a com-
plication of many conditions, such
as chronic bursitis, fractures, ten-
don infections or chronic sprains.
It results mainly from failure of
the patient to exercise the joint
properly.
As the name implies, the shoul-
der is stiff, immovable and usual-
ly painful. Treatment depends on
clearing' the underlying trouble,
then using exercise and heat to re-
establish normal shoulder motion.
B of M Resources
Are At New High
Bank of Montreal resources
reached a new high during 1960
and new records were set in al-
most every phase of the bank's
operations, according to its 143rd
annual statement for the year end-
ed October 31st.
B of M assets rose more than
$225 million to $3,485, million dur-
ing the year, while loans' in all
categories maintained the 1959
peak of 1,773 million.
Total deposits were shown at
$3,200 million, an increase of $202
million, or 6.7 per cent, from 1959,
and were 'the highest in the bank's
history. The expansion was large-
ly attributable to Canadians' per-
sohal savings and to foreign de-
posits.
Quick assets of $1,771 million, or
$193 million more than a year earl-
ier. reflected the traditionally
strong liquid position of the bank.
This amount represents almost 54
per cent of all B of M liabilities
to the public, against 51.6 per cent
in 1959.
Earnings At Record
Earnings before taxes were at
the record figure of $31,578,780. But
$17,352,044—equal to 55 per cent—
was earmarked for taxes, so that
the net profit for the year's opera-
tions of more than. 840 B of M of-
fices at home and abroad was $14,-
226,736. This was $2,035,678 more
than in 1959.
The bank's 21.000 shareholders
are receiving $2.00 per share—or
$12,148.167 of the year's net pro-
fit -15 cents more than the 1959
figure of $1.85, and 35 cents more
than the $1.65 'paid in 1958.
Shareholders' Equity Up
The transfer of $2 million from
undivided profits brought the B
of M's "rest—or reserve—account
to $141,850,000. This, plus paid-up
eapital of $60,750,000 and the re-
maining undivided profits, brought
total shareholders' equity to the
record figure of $203,750,859.
