SMITH Phone 792 Seaforth FoIIow These Suggestions For Bright; Safer Christmas To help you make this Christ- mas season the brightest, safest ever, here are some worthwhile hints on decorating, inside and out- side, all around the house. Caring For Your Christmas Tree As soon as you bring the tree home, stand it in a pail or tub filled with water unt1P' you are ready to set it up and trim it. This will prolong the life and ap- pearance. of the tree, keep the needles from falling, and mini- mize the danger of fire. Trimming Your Tree Keep your tree stand water -well full and your tree will remain fresh and fragrant throughout the holidays. Bear in mind that tree trim- ming follows a fundamental rule of women's fashions — accentu- ate the opposite. If your tree is tall and slinder, decorating lines should tend toward the horizontal. (See Fig. 1.) If it is short and full, trim your tree along line. which tend to be vertical. (See Fig. 2.) Apply- ing this simple rule will help you bring out the best in the tree. How Many Lights? Too often, the number of -lights used to trim a tree is arrived at by guesswork, and results look dis- appointingly :spotty." There is a formula, however, which does away with much of the guesswork and helps produce an evenly light- ed appearance. To achieve what professionals call a "good lighted effect," try this for- mula: Height of tree (in feet) x width of tree at base (in feet) x 3. Let's say your tree is six' feet in height and 41/2 feet wide at the base, (See Fig. 3.) The formula would work like this: 6 x 41/2 x 3 = 81 lights for "good lighted effect." While personal taste is the Iast,Aword in decorating Christmas trees, each year finds more fam- ilies adopting 'the above formula which will help in bringing out the natural beauty of their tree and give a good -lighted effect": No. of lamps re- quired to give a Good Lighted Size of Tree - Effect" 4' 36 5' 56 6' 81 7' 110 8' 144 10' 225 Where To Start 1 Trees should always be trimmed from the top down. In working from the bottom up, a trimmer is literally "in his own way," and runs the risk of knocking the tree down. So start at the top, with your angel or star ornament, and work down. After your tree -top ornament is firmly in place, string the tree lights, using the formula outlined above for a good lighted effect. Reflectors and halos are available at modest cost, and these greatly increase the brilliance of tree lights, Next, add your "continu- ous" decoration, such as strung popcorn. Follow this with glass ball ornaments, snow balls, candy calces arui similar decorations. Last, addd'aluminum or lead ,tin- sel. one piece at a time, 'anti fin- ish perhaps with a spray of arti- ficial snow. Most Important of All—Safety From coast to coast, some 3,500,- 000 families will light up their Christmas trees this year. I£ all of us practice safety, we may make this year when no Christmas tree fire sweeps through a Canadian home, turning a family's joy into grief. There is a highly effective way to protect against short cir- cuits and overloading. Simply make sure you plug a safety "fus- ed" plug set (such as those offer- ed by Noma Lites)'into your ori inal source of current and th n add your other decorative sets to this set, This will ensure protec- tion against overloads and short circuits, and prevent darkened rooms due to blown -out fuses. In addition, inspect all light sets care- fuIly for fraying or exposed wires. Let's make this Christmas the safest on record. Light Up Those Indoor Focal Points Windows, end tables, mantles, foyer, tables and stair rails are all decor- ating focal points at Christ - m a s. Window wreaths and candoliers come in a wide variety to suit the indi- vidual taste, while end tables lend thehnselves to small artificial Christmas trees with lights that bubble or twinkle merrily. Man - ties provide an ideal setting for angel figures, candles, and lights with reflectors set into a back- ground of evergreen branches. (See 'Fig. 4.) Foyer tables are just right for a "specialty" display, suck as illuminated paper poinset- tias in a centerpiece basket. Your stair rail, aglow, with lights tuck- ed between pine and laurel brancheswill add still more cheer to your holiday. THE HURON EXPOSITOR Seaforth, Ontario Outdoor Decoration Says Merry Christmas To All The exterior of your home and your grounds offer tremendous de- corating oppor- tunities, B u t practice safety outside as well as inside, Make sure all outside wire is No. 12 or No. 14, rubbetr insulated and heavy duty. The best source of current for outdoor lighting is a permanent, protected outdoor -type receptacle, or a garage or porch lamp. Even without such an outlet, you can safely reach an indoor receptacle.
