more boys can be accepted for the
time being.

House Plants Are
Fussy About Soil
House plants are pretty fussy
when it comes to their choice of
soil. And they won't grow for you
unless they get the mixture that
they want.
Here's a mixture that H. Bailey,
horticulturist with the Ontario De-
partment of Agriculture, suggests:
Sevent parts compost or good
garden soil; two parts organic mat-
ter (well -rotted leafmold or peat);
one part well -rotted manure; two
parts building sand.
It'sa good idea to add about
half a 4 -inch pot of superphosphate
to every bushel that you prepare.
'If the soil is low in fertility, add
one-quarter of a 4 -inch pot of com-
plete , fertilizer and the same
amount of superphosphateper
bushel. Mix well.
For protection against many dis-
eases, sterilize the soil before add-
ing fertilizer, using one. `of„ these
methods:
Oven Method: Place a pan of
moist soil in the oven and heat
to 200 degrees F. for at least half
an hour'.
Outdoor Method: Place 6 inches
of soil on a metal sheet. Heat ov-
er a fire, stirring fregjuently. so
that the bottom layer doesn't burn.'
Hot water method: Pour enough
boiling water through the soil to
heat it to 170 to 200 degrees F.
Drain to the right moisture con-
tent before using.
What's the right moisture con-
tent for potting? If the soil just
holds together when you squeeze
it, you have it.
